Chart Performance: Pop (#22) and Alternative (#1); 2009

Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

In 2009, Green Day released 21 Guns as a single from their album 21st Century Breakdown. Written by Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool, the song became one of the album’s most commercially successful tracks.

Produced by Butch Vig, the recording blends arena-style rock with a mid-tempo arrangement, featuring layered guitars and a prominent chorus. Released in the spring of 2009, 21 Guns reached #1 on the Alternative chart and crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100.

The lyric centers on conflict and surrender, using the image of a “21-gun salute” as a metaphor for laying down emotional defenses. Rather than political protest, the song reflects personal struggle and the desire for reconciliation.

21 Guns earned Grammy nominations and remains one of Green Day’s defining late-career singles, representing a more melodic direction within their broader rock catalog.
