2Pac

2Pac Biography

Tupac Amaru Shakur, well known as 2Pac and later Makaveli, was an American rapper and actor who was born Lesane Parish Crooks. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Shakur is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, with over 75 million albums sold worldwide. Much of Shakur’s music has been credited with addressing current social issues plaguing inner communities, and he is seen as a symbol of anti-inequality activism.

Shakur was born in New York City on June 16, 1971, to parents who were both political activists and members of the Black Panther Party. He was raised by his mother in Baltimore before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988. He became a central character in West Coast hip hop for his conscious rap lyrics after the publication of his debut album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991. Shakur’s follow-up albums, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z… (1993) and Me Against the World (1995), were both critically and commercially successful. All Eyez on Me (1996), the first double-length album in hip-hop history, ditched his pensive lyrics in favour of combustible gangsta rap. Shakur was also a successful actor, with leading roles in films like as Juice (1992), Poetic Justice (1993), Above the Rim (1994), Bullet (1996), Gridlock’d (1997), and Gang Related (1997).

Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z…, Shakur’s second album, was released in February 1993. It was a critical and commercial success, debuting at No. 24 on the Billboard 200’s pop albums chart. In March 1995, Shakur’s third album, Me Against the World, was released while he was still in prison. It is now widely regarded as his magnum opus, and is frequently considered as one of the finest and most influential rap albums of all time. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 240,000 copies in its first week, setting a record for the best first-week sales for a solo male rapper at the time.

Shakur was shot five times in the lobby of a New York recording studio during the latter portion of his career and faced legal issues, including jail. Shakur was sentenced to eight months in prison for sexual molestation in 1995, but was released pending an appeal. Following his release, he joined Marion “Suge” Knight’s Death Row Records and became embroiled in the East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry. Shakur was shot four times by an unnamed assailant in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, and died six days later. Due to their public enmity, Shakur’s friend-turned-rival, the Notorious B.I.G., was first considered a suspect after his death, but was killed six months later in a drive-by shooting while visiting Los Angeles.

Shakur’s double-length posthumous album Greatest Hits (1999) is one of just nine hip hop albums to receive a Diamond certification in the United States. Since Shakur’s death, five more albums have been released, including the critically praised posthumous album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory (1996), all of which have been certified Platinum in the United States. Shakur was elected to the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Shakur among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
