A Tribe Called Quest is one of the most renowned groups in Hip Hop. They were a big part of the popularity of a new genre in the early 1990s. ATCQ released their fourth album, Beats, Rhymes & Life, in 1996. The Ummah was formed that same year, with Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed, and the talented newcomer Jay Dee (now Jay Dilla of Slum Village) as members. They collaborated with musicians like Janet Jackson, D’Angelo, and Faith Evans to share their sound. ATCQ kept refining their hip-hop style and improving their sound. After completing their fifth studio album, The Love Movement, they decided to step away from the stage.
Fans have been waiting for a new ATCQ album for a while now. The Abstract Poetic, Five Foot Assasin, and Mr. Muhammad are back on tour, but no new album yet. Their live performances are still amazing and their fans love it.
The band got back together on November 13, 2004. They were the headline act at the Rock the Bells concert in Anaheim, California. It took place in the parking lot of Angels Stadium. That night was special because it was the same night Ol’ Dirty Bastard died. The band started with a 10-minute tribute to the Wu-Tang Clan. Then they went on to perform a 2-hour high-energy show. It was quite the extravaganza.
ATCQ headlined the Rock the Bells concert series in 2008. They also co-headlined the Rock the Bells festival series in 2010 with Snoop Dogg and Wu-Tang Clan. The band recently got back together to perform at a few select festivals in 2013. These festivals included Yahoo! Wireless in London, Splash! in Germany, OpenAir Frauenfeld in Switzerland, and H2O Music Festival in Los Angeles. A Tribe Called Quest was the most commercially successful act from the Native Tongues. All six of their albums were certified gold or platinum. AllMusic’s John Bush called them the most intelligent and artistic rap ensemble of the 1990s.
Kris Ex from Pitchfork said they’re one of the best in hip-hop history. A Tribe Called Quest got the Founders Award at the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Awards in 2005. Two years later, they were honored at the 4th VH1 Hip Hop Honors. In 2017, they won the Brit Award for International Group.
