Aerosmith Biography
American rock group Aerosmith was founded in Boston in 1970. Brad Whitford plays drums, Joe Perry plays guitar, Tom Hamilton plays bass, Joey Kramer plays drums, Brad Whitford plays guitar, and Steven Tyler sings lead for the ensemble. Their loud rocking blues-based sound, which also incorporates pop rock, heavy metal, glam metal, and rhythm and blues, has influenced numerous other rock musicians. They are also referred to as “America’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band” and “the Bad Boys from Boston.” The “Toxic Twins” are the principal songwriting duo of Tyler and Perry.
Former members of the Jam Band, Perry and Hamilton met Tyler, Kramer, and guitarist Ray Tabano to establish Aerosmith. In 1971, Tabano was replaced by Whitford. After releasing their self-titled debut album in 1973 and Get Your Wings the following year, they went on to release a streak of multi-platinum albums. Rocks (1976) and Toys in the Attic (1975) marked the band’s entry into the mainstream (1976). In 1977 and 1979, Draw the Line and Night in the Ruts respectively. The group performed a lot of live shows throughout the 1970s and charted 12 Hot 100 singles, including “Sweet Emotion,” which reached the Top 40, and the Top 10 singles “Dream On” and “Walk This Way.” They became one of the most well-known hard rock bands by the end of the decade and amassed a fan base that was frequently referred to as the “Blue Army.” Perry and Whitford left in 1979 and 1981 as a result of drug abuse and internal strife. The band struggled, and their 1982 album Rock in a Hard Place underperformed their earlier hits.
In 1984, Perry and Whitford rejoined Aerosmith. They released Done with Mirrors (1985) following a comeback tour, but it failed to achieve sales targets. They did not achieve their prior level of fame until a 1986 collaboration with the rap group Run-D.M.C. on a remake of “Walk This Way” and the 1987 multi-platinum LP, Permanent Vacation. The band began their most extensive concert tours to date in the late 1980s and early 1990s, winning multiple honors for the songs from the multi-platinum albums Pump (1989), Get a Grip (1993), and Nine Lives (1997). “Dude (Looks Like a Lady),” “Angel,” “Rag Doll,” “Love in an Elevator,” “Janie’s Got a Gun,” “What it Takes,” “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Cryin’,” and “Crazy” were some of their biggest singles during this time. The group also shot well-known music videos and made prominent cameos in movies, TV shows, and video games. With “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” from Armageddon’s soundtrack, they had their first number-one hit in 1998, and the following year, their roller coaster attraction at Walt Disney World opened. One of the most astonishing and spectacular comebacks in rock history has been cited for them. In 2001, 2004, and 2012, other albums Just Push Play (which featured the popular song “Jaded”), Honkin’ on Bobo (a collection of blues songs), and Music from Another Dimension! were released. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, which is regarded as the best-selling band-focused video game, was launched in 2008. Even after 50 years, the band is still performing live and releasing music. The band has maintained a concert residency in Las Vegas since 2019. The residency was put on hold from 2020 to 2021 because of the COVID-19 epidemic, but it was restarted in September 2022.
With over 150 million records sold worldwide, including over 85 million in the US, Aerosmith is the most successful American hard rock band of all time. They hold the record for the most total certifications by an American group and are tied for the most multi-platinum albums by an American group with 25 gold, 18 platinum, and 12 multi-platinum albums. Twenty-one US Hot 100 Top 40 songs, nine Mainstream Rock hits that reached number one, four Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, and ten MTV Video Music Awards are among their accomplishments. They were ranked 57 and 30, respectively, on Rolling Stone’s and VH1’s lists of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. The band won the MusiCares Person of the Year award in 2020, and Tyler and Perry were elected into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.
