Chart Performance: Pop (#1); 2007

Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

In 2007, Fergie released Big Girls Don’t Cry as the fourth single from her debut solo album The Dutchess. Written by Fergie, Toby Gad, and others, the song marked a departure from the more upbeat, hip-hop-influenced tracks that had defined the album’s earlier singles.

Produced by Toby Gad and will.i.am, the recording features a restrained pop arrangement built around acoustic guitar and subtle percussion. The simplified production highlights Fergie’s vocal delivery and the reflective tone of the lyric.

Released in the summer of 2007, Big Girls Don’t Cry climbed to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the year’s most successful singles.

The lyric centers on personal growth and independence rather than heartbreak alone. Framed as a farewell, the narrator acknowledges the need to move forward without resentment, emphasizing maturity over drama.

Big Girls Don’t Cry became one of Fergie’s signature solo hits and helped solidify her success outside of The Black Eyed Peas.
