Blind Melon Biography
Blind Melon is a five-piece American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1990 by three Mississippians, one Pennsylvanian, and one Indiana. Guitarists Rogers Stevens and Christopher Thorn, drummer Glen Graham, vocalist Travis Warren, and bassist Nathan Towne make up the current lineup. They are best known for their 1993 single “No Rain,” and their neo-psychedelic approach on alternative rock brought them critical and financial success in the early 1990s.
After West Point, Mississippi, Blind Melon formed in Los Angeles in March 1990. In 1991, the band released The Goodfoot Workshop, a four-song demo. Blind Melon was signed by Capitol Records A&R executive Tim Devine later that year, and he oversaw recordings with legendary producer David Briggs for an unreleased EP titled The Sippin’ Time Sessions. The band was dissatisfied with the production quality, therefore the recordings were scrapped. Hoon’s connection and association with Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose garnered the band extra industry recognition when he sang backing vocals on many Guns N’ Roses tracks on the Use Your Illusion I and II albums in 1991, including the single “Don’t Cry.” Late that year, Blind Melon embarked on a tour with Soundgarden.
“No Rain” helped the band gain international prominence thanks to a hit music video featuring Heather DeLoach as the “Bee Girl.” After debuting in the Billboard top 40 on October 9, 1993, and peaking at No. 11 on the Hot 100, the album went triple platinum.
Blind Melon went on tour in support of Soup against the advice of Hoon’s drug counselor. The band hired a counselor to help Hoon with his rehabilitation at first, but he was quickly fired. Hoon died of a heart attack caused by a cocaine overdose aboard the band’s tour bus on October 21, 1995, in downtown New Orleans, after several weeks on the road. During this time, the band members’ relationships deteriorated as they attempted to find a new front man. Blind Melon formally disbanded their partnership on March 4, 1999, after failing to find a replacement for Hoon, and the individual members went on to other ventures.
A Classic Masters CD with twelve Blind Melon tracks was published by Capitol Records in 2002. The band published The Best of Blind Melon in 2005, a CD–DVD package that shows Blind Melon performing live from a September 1995 concert in Chicago, thanks to better-than-expected sales. Yakmusic in New Zealand issued a tribute CD to Blind Melon on December 15, 2006, featuring musicians from all over the world. Capitol Records published the Live at the Palace CD in April 2006.
On September 15, 2006, Blind Melon announced their revival, which featured the inclusion of new lead singer Travis Warren and the recording of “For My Friends.” Warren quit Blind Melon shortly after its publication, but returned in 2010, when the band resumed performing infrequent shows. The group has received four Grammy nominations.
All I Can Say, a documentary about Hoon (made largely of video filmed on a handheld camera from 1990 to 1995), premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 26, 2019 and was available on online streaming platforms on June 26, 2020. On November 24, 2020, it was also released on DVD and Blu-ray.
“Way Down And Far Below,” Blind Melon’s first song in 11 years, was released in September 2019. Thorn indicated that the band planned to release their fourth full-length studio album in 2020; however, when asked about the status of the fourth studio album in a February 2021 interview with Guitar World, Stevens replied “We’re going to release singles every couple of months, and then when there are 10-12 of them, we’re going to press vinyl and sell it to whoever wants it,” while when Thorn was asked if the plan was to release the album by year’s end, he replied, “We’ve got to get a record out this year. For sure.”
Author Greg Prato released Shannon, a follow-up book to A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other, on November 1, 2021. Shannon includes all-new interviews with those who knew Shannon or were fans of his music (plus a “roundtable discussion” with Stevens and Thorn).
