Bob Seger Biography

Robert Clark Seger is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He played and recorded as Bob Seger and the Last Heard and Bob Seger System as a locally popular Detroit-area performer throughout the 1960s, breaking through with his first album, Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man (which had his first national hit of the same name) in 1968.

Seger, who was born on May 6, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, began his long career as a member of the Decibels in the early 1960s. He later joined Doug Brown And The Omens as an organist, but as such abilities became apparent, he was promoted to vocalist and songwriter. The Beach Bums made their musical debut with ‘The Ballad Of The Yellow Beret,’ but due to a potential lawsuit, this pastiche of the contemporaneous Barry Sadler song, ‘The Ballad Of The Green Beret,’ was pulled. The band was renamed Bob Seger And The Last Heard, and they had several stunning songs, including ‘East Side Story’ (1966) and ‘Heavy Music’ (1967).

In 1968, Capitol Records signed Seger, and his new band, the Bob Seger System, had a Top 20 hit in the United States with ‘Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man.’ Several superb hard rock albums followed, including the stunning Mongrel record, but the performer was unable to replicate his early popularity and the group split in 1971. Seger returned to music with his own label, Palladium Records, after a spell of studying for a college degree, and released three unremarkable albums. His 1974 hit, ‘Get Out Of Denver,’ received widespread recognition and has since become a well-covered classic.

When Seger returned to Capitol, he only had modest commercial success with Beautiful Loser, which charted towards the bottom of the US album charts (number 131). With the Silver Bullet Band (Drew Abbott on guitar, Robyn Robbins on keyboards, Alto Reed on saxophone, Chris Campbell on bass, and Charlie Allen Martin on drums), Seger reaffirmed his in-concert appeal with the thrilling Live Bullet, which was followed by Night Moves, his first platinum disc. In 1977, the title tune made the Top 5 in the United States, a record that ‘Still The Same’ duplicated the following year. Stranger In Town, a triple-platinum album that includes ‘Hollywood Nights,’ ‘We’ve Got Tonite,’ and ‘Old Time Rock & Roll,’ was the source of the latter hit. The set reaffirmed Seger’s ability to convey the hopes of blue-collar America by couching simple themes in classic, R&B-based rock, a feature aided by his demanding tour schedule. Against The Wind topped the US album charts for six weeks, and Nine Tonight, another live set, gave the artist time to refuel his creative batteries.

For The Distance, Seger enlisted Jimmy Iovine and numerous studio musicians, but the album stagnated at number five, prompting guitarist Abbott’s departure, the first of multiple line-up changes in the Silver Bullet Band. The Rodney Crowell song ‘Shame On The Moon’ (a number 2 success at the start of 1983), ‘Even Now,’ ‘Understanding’ (from the movie Teachers), ‘American Storm,’ ‘Like A Rock,’ and 1987’s number 1 hit ‘Shakedown,’ taken from the soundtrack of Beverly Hills Cop II,’ were among Seger’s later hit songs. While Seger was properly regarded as a big musician in the United States, he was only able to attract a cult audience in the rest of the globe.

In 1991, Seger released The Fire Inside, his first studio album in five years. It was a Top 10 smash in the United States, co-produced by Don Was, demonstrating that his tremendous fanbase had not waned. Seger’s enduring popularity was shown by an extremely successful greatest hits collection released in 1994 (along with numerous sleeve comments from the artist). It’s A Mystery was released after a long hiatus, apparently as a result of the band’s recent popularity. With frequent riff rockers like ‘Lock And Load’ and acoustic ventures like ‘By The River,’ it explored traditional Seger territory. The title tune, a fantastic mantric rocker that sounds less like Seger and more like Hüsker Dü, was the most interesting track on the album. In 1996, he followed up the album’s success with a box office record-breaking tour across America. According to Ticketmaster, the performance in his hometown sold 100,000 tickets in just 57 minutes.

Seger has sold more than 75 million records worldwide over the course of his six-decade career, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. In 2004, Seger was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2012, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

At the 12th annual Billboard Touring Conference & Awards, held November 18–19 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York, Seger was named Billboard’s 2015 Legend of Live honoree. In September 2018, he announced his farewell tour. Bob Seger songs have found their way into Top 40 charts for a few decades now.
