Bon Jovi Biography

“Success is falling nine times and getting up ten” — Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi, known for hit songs “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin on a Prayer” is the founder and lead singer for the self-titled band Bon Jovi. Born March 2nd, 1962, Bon Jovi epitomized a Rockstar personality from an early age, reportedly skipping classes to record music at his cousin’s music studio. He initially went to high school in Metuchen, but was transferred to Parlin High School due to bad grades. Despite these bad grades, his first professional recording gig was on the holiday album ‘Christmas in the Stars’ in 1980.

Bon Jovi has had over 19 Singles in the Top 40 Billboard Hot 100. His first Top 40 Hit was Runaway from his first self-titled album, released in 1984. “Livin’ On a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name” hit number one for the Billboard Top 100 and “Wanted Dead or Alive” hit number seven. He has sold over 130,000,000 records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has 25 songs on the Billboard Top 100, 10 of which are in the top 10 and 4 number one hits. Bon Jovi released sixteen studio albums. Of those, nine went platinum. Always was his highest selling single, spending six months in the top 10. He’s performed in over 2,700 Concerts in 50 countries.

His father was from an Italian family and his mother is of Russian and German descent. When he was sixteen, he was already playing in clubs. Before becoming a major musical success, he was sweeping floors as a janitor at The Power Station, a recording studio near the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan. There, he got to rub elbows and record demos with famous musicians. Runaway, one of the demos recorded there, got the attention of a New Jersey radio station and subsequently he would sign with Mercury/Polygram Records.

Bon Jovi’s cousin, Tony Bongiovi, owner of The Power Station in the 80’s, sued him claiming that he is responsible for Bon Jovi’s success. Bongiovi claims that Bon Jovi is successful because of free studio time that he gave to him and claims ownership of material that was produced during that time. Bon Jovi told Howard Stern, “I’m absolutely grateful to the guy, but he doesn’t own the rights to my early, early kid stuff.”

He married Dorothea Hurley, his high school sweetheart, in 1989 in secret during at trip to Las Vegas. “I wouldn’t trade my wife for five Cindy Crawfords,” he said of his wife. Despite being a world-renowned rock star, he leads a simple and drama free family life. He and his wife have four children together.

In 1987, Bon Jovi collaborated with Cher on her self-titled album, co-writing the songs and producing many of the tracks for the album.

In addition to his music, Bon Jovi has appeared in a number of television shows and movies. Credits include a recurring character on Sex In The City and the 2000 movie U-571. Bon Jovi songs have found their way into Top 40 charts for a few decades now.
