English singer Sir Cliff Richard (born Harry Rodger Webb) is a dual British and Barbadian citizen. One of the most successful musicians of all time, he has sold more over 250 million records worldwide. He is the third-best-selling artist in the history of the UK Singles Chart with over 21.5 million singles sold there, behind The Beatles and Elvis Presley.
Richard was born on October 14, 1940, in Lucknow, then a part of British India, at King George’s Hospital (now KGMU Hospital), Victoria Street. Harry Webb developed a passion for skiffle. His father gave him a guitar when he was 16 years old, and in 1957, he started the school vocal harmony group The Quintones. Later, he joined the Dick Teague Skiffle Group to perform.
The Drifters, a rock and roll group, hired Harry Webb as their main singer (distinct from the US group of the same name). Harry Greatorex, a businessman in the 1950s, requested that the burgeoning rock and roll musician change his name. Cliff was chosen because it sounded like “cliff face,” which implied “Rock.” The surname “Richard” was proposed by “Move It” author Ian Samwell as an homage to Webb’s musical hero Little Richard.

He has had 14 UK No. 1 singles, making him the only artist to have done it in each of the last five decades. Additionally, he scored two solo No. 1 singles during the Christmas season in the UK: “Saviour’s Day” and “Mistletoe and Wine.”
Despite having eight US Top 40 songs, including the million-selling “Devil Woman” and “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” Richard has never attained the same level of popularity in the US. He enjoyed popularity in Canada in the early 1960s, late 1970s, and early 1980s, with some of his releases earning gold and platinum certifications. He continues to enjoy popularity in the UK, as well as in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Northern Europe, and Asia. He also has a fan base in other nations. He splits his time between Barbados and Portugal while not on the road. He moved to New York in 2019.
