Culture Club Biography

Culture Club

Culture Club is a 1981 London-based English new wave band. Boy George (lead vocals), Roy Hay (guitar and keyboards), and Mikey Craig (bass guitar) make up the band, which previously included Jon Moss (drums and percussion). They were one of the most representative and important groups of the 1980s, having sprung from the New Romantic scene.

The band has sold over 50 million records worldwide, including over 6 million BPI certified records in the UK and over 7 million RIAA certified records in the US, led by singer and frontman Boy George, whose androgynous style of dressing caught the attention of the public and the media in the early 1980s. “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” “Time (Clock of the Heart),” “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya,” “Church of the Poison Mind,” “Karma Chameleon,” “Victims,” “Miss Me Blind,” “It’s a Miracle,” “The War Song,” “Move Away,” and “I Just Wanna Be Loved” are among their many hits. Between 1982 and 1999, they had twelve Top 40 hit singles in the UK, including the number ones “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” and “Karma Chameleon,” the latter of which was the best-selling single in the UK in 1983 and reached number one on the US Hot 100 in 1984. The song “Time (Clock of the Heart)” is one of the 500 songs that shaped rock and roll, according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Color by Numbers, their second album, has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. It was listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, as well as Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 Best Albums of the 1980s. Ten of their singles entered the Top 40 in the United States, and they are connected with the Second British Invasion of British new wave bands who became successful in the United States thanks to MTV, the cable music channel. The music of Culture Club is a mix of British new wave and American soul and pop. It also incorporates elements of Jamaican reggae, as well as other styles including calypso, salsa, and, with “Karma Chameleon,” country music.

Culture Club received the Brit Award for Best British Group, the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and the Brit Award for Best British Single (“Karma Chameleon”) in 1984. They were nominated for the Grammy Award for Pop Vocal by Group or Duo the same year. In addition, the band was nominated for a Juno Award in Canada for International Album of the Year. Culture Club was nominated for an American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group Video Artist in January 1985, and for their video “It’s a Miracle” in September 1985, they were nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards for Best Special Effects and Best Art Direction. They were nominated for another American Music Award in 1987 for Favorite Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group Video Artist.

The group disbanded in 1986, leaving behind several tracks that are considered classics of the new wave era. However, in 1998, the band members put their differences aside and reformed, with a performance on VH1 Storytellers to kick things off. The tour went off without a hitch. The compilation album Greatest Moments, based on the Storytellers’ performance, was released and went platinum in the United Kingdom. It featured new tracks such as “I Just Wanna Be Loved,” which charted at No. 4 in the United Kingdom. Their newfound popularity, however, was short-lived, as their fifth studio album, Don’t Mind If I Do, peaked at No. 64 in the UK in 1999. “Your Kisses Are Charity” (UK No. 25) and “Cold Shoulder” were small UK singles (UK No. 43).

The band went on to tour before reuniting in 2002 for a 20th anniversary concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
