Dave Matthews Band (abbreviated as DMB) is an American rock band founded in 1991 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dave Matthews Band is one of the most influential bands in rock history, with a career spanning more than 25 years. Dave Matthews, a vocalist and guitarist, wanted to record some songs he’d written in 1991, and enlisted the help of drummer Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore, both established jazz performers in the Charlottesville, VA music scene. Stefan Lessard, a 16-year-old bassist, joined the band shortly after. Their catchy, distinct sound drew a lot of early notice and a devoted following, propelling the band to become one of the most successful touring bands of the last three decades. Matthews, Lessard, and Beauford are the only founding members still performing in the band as of 2022.

After founding member LeRoi Moore died in August 2008, the band released the Platinum-certified Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King in 2009. Since then, the Dave Matthews Band has included longtime colleagues and touring musicians Jeff Coffin (saxophone), Rashawn Ross (horns), and Tim Reynolds (guitar), as well as keyboardist Buddy Strong.

The Dave Matthews Band began their 43-city summer 2012 tour in The Woodlands, Texas.

Away from the World, the band’s ninth studio album, was released on September 11, 2012.Steve Lillywhite, who had not worked with the band since their collaboration on the never-released “The Lillywhite Sessions” in 2000, returned to produce the album.
