Deep Purple, known for Smoke on the Water, was formed in 1968. The band lineup had changed several times and they had hiatus between 1976 and 1984. Their lineups are labeled Mark I, II, III, and IV between 1968 and 1976. The band’s past members were Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Nick Simper, Rod Evans, Glenn Hughes, David Coverdale, Tommy Bolin, and Joe Lynn Turner. Deep Purple’s current lineup consists of Ian, Roger, Ian Gillan, Stev, and Don.

Deep Purple released their first album, Shades of Deep Purple, in 1968. The album was not well received by selling 1,625,000 copies and it did not chart. They have released 22 studio albums between 1968 and 2021.

Machine Head was released on March 25th, 1972, and is their sixth studio album. It reached number one in many countries, including number one in the UK. By selling over 2,500,000 million copies worldwide Machine Head became the commercially most successful album of all time selling more copies than any other Deep Purple record in the band’s history.
