DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince were an American hip hop combo made up of rapper Will Smith (the Fresh Prince) and disc jockey Jeff Townes from West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (DJ Jazzy Jeff). “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” is one of their most well-known songs. They had a streak of pleasant and hilarious hit singles from 1986 until 1994, and occasionally thereafter.
Although “Parents Just Don’t Understand” (1988) garnered the group their first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989, their most popular track was “Summertime” (1991), which earned the group their second Grammy Award and reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

Smith began pursuing acting full-time shortly after, and the two parted ways. Jive eventually sued him and Townes, alleging that the duo was still under contract to make further records.
The label issued the Greatest Classics compilation in 1998, which included the hits as well as two previously unreleased songs. Despite the fact that the duo had not been technically a “group” since 1993, they remained close friends and performed together in every big concert or award ceremony, as well as frequently collaborating on Smith’s solo albums. Smith and Townes performed together at Live 8 in Philadelphia in 2005. They played in Croatia on August 26, 2017, Blackpool on August 27, and Budapest on September 25, 2019.
