Drake – Biography, Songs, Albums, Discography & Facts

Aubrey Drake Graham, most commonly known as Drake, is a Canadian rapper, singer, actor and businessman. Drake rose to prominence on the teen soap opera tv show “Degrassi”. Following success as a child, he desired a career in music, releasing his first mixtape in 2006. While this first mixtape didn’t see immediate success, it wouldn’t take long for Drake to rise to the top of the music world, signing a deal with Lil Wayne’s “Young Money Entertainment” in 2009. This deal followed the release of his first hit mixtape “So Far Gone” which featured his first ever hit song “Best I Ever Had”. This song peaked at No.2 on the Billboard hot 100 and catapulted Drake into superstardom. Since then he has not looked back, selling over 170 million albums, winning five Grammys and having more chart-topping no.1 singles then any other rapper in history (13). His success has been undeniable and he has cemented himself as a household name and hip-hop icon.

Early Life and Background

Aubrey Drake Graham was born on October 24, 1986 in Toronto, Canada. He was born with music in his blood as his father, Dennis Graham, was a drummer for the legendary rock star Jerry Lee Lewis, while his uncle played bass for Prince. Drake comes from a somewhat unique ethnic and religious background as his father is an African American Catholic while his mother is a white Canadian Jew. This led to some isolation in his youth as he attended a high school that was virtually all-white. Themes of identity and race are prevalent in his music and his public image as he has sometimes been criticized by American rappers for being “not black enough”. However, Drake has never let this criticism phase him, consistently dropping No.1 albums and proving that he belongs at the top of the hip-hop scene.

Early Career and Breakthrough

Drake first gained popularity on hit Canadian tv show, Degrassi. This big break was actually due to one of Drake’s classmates introducing him to his father who was a talent agent. He starred on Degrassi from 2001-2009, gaining immense popularity in Canada. While still on Degrassi, Drake began working on his music career, dropping the mixtapes “Room for Improvement” in 2006 and “Comeback Season” in 2007. Following the elimination of Drake’s character from Degrassi in 2008, he received a call from Lil Wayne asking Drake to join him for his tour. Following this tour, as well as recording a number of songs with Lil Wayne, Drake released his first hit mixtape, “So Far Gone”. This landed him a record deal with Lil Wayne’s label and increased his popularity in the rap industry. In 2010, Drake released his first full studio album, “Thank Me Later”, which would debut at No.1 on the album charts and become certified platinum. He followed this album up with “Take Care” which was an instant classic, winning multiple Grammys in 2013, including best rap album. His albums include a diverse set of music, with songs that highlight Drake’s vocals as well as songs that demonstrated his lyricism and rapping prowess. His fame would only rise following these two albums, consistently releasing chart-topping albums and singles that solidified him as one of the greatest hip-hop artists of this generation.
