Eddie Floyd Biography

“Once you’re part of that music, it’s till you die. It’s just as simple as that.”

Eddie Floyd, known for his R&B #1 Hit Song Knock On Wood, sang R&B in the 1960’s and ’70’s. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1937 before later moving to Detroit, where he would start his musical career. Knock On Wood was the name of his debut album and also contained the track of the same name, which would be Floyd’s only #1 Hit. He was 32 years old when he released Knock on Wood with Stax Records. The Album hit the US Pop Singles chart, placing at #28 and it ranked #1 on the US Black Singles.

Eddie would go on to produce 17 total albums between 1967 and 2013, but Knock on Wood would remain his biggest commercial success. 16 titles would go on to place in the R&B Top 100 and 10 would place in the US Pop 100.

Considered by many the best Soul Recordsof 1966, it debuted at No. 97 on the Billboard Top 100 and it peaked at No. 28. The single of Knock On Wood would hit #1 on the Billboard R&B Chart and the Album was certified Gold, selling more than 1,000,000 copies.

The iconic song was composed in the Lorraine Motel, where a few years later Martin Luther King Jr. would be assassinated. The famous line, “It’s like thunder, lightning, the way you love me is frightening…” when written after Eddie was talking with his guitarist Steve Crooper about how he would hide under the bed during of loud thunderstorms in Alabama. Ringo Star said it was his favorite song of all time. It’s been covered many times, including by David Bowie, Amii Stewart and Eric Clapton and Michael Bolton.

Eddie was known for composing songs. In fact, his first recording contact was with Stax Records, not as a singer but as a song writer. He would write numerous songs for numerous artists during his years at Stax Records, many of which would chart in the top 100. Two of the hits he composed were “634-5789” and “Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won’t Do).” Eddie was the most consistent hitmaker at Stax Records. Unfortunately, when Stax records failed in 1975, some believe it took Eddie’s career along with it.

In 2011, Eddie said “Soul music is a feeling. It’s genuine. Audiences respond to soul singers, not just the music. But to be effective, a soul singer needs to feel the words and to send out those feelings.”

In 2012, Eddie was included in the Caroline Beach Music Hall of Fame and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2018. He continued to perform around the world for many decades, even after his career had faded somewhat. Eddie performed Knock On Wood for President Obama in 2013, as part of a PBS In Performance At The White House series. The crowed reportedly went “nuts” for Eddies performance.
