Elvis Presley Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley was a singer and actor from the United States. He is known as the “King of Rock and Roll” and is considered one of the most important cultural symbols of the twentieth century. His energising interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, along with a uniquely potent blend of inspirations spanning colour lines during a pivotal period in racial relations, led to both immense success and initial controversy.

Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, and moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family when he was 13 years old. In 1954, he began his music career with Sun Records, working with producer Sam Phillips to promote the sound of African-American music to a larger audience. Presley, with lead guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black on rhythm acoustic guitar, was a pioneer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven mix of country music and rhythm & blues. Colonel Tom Parker, who would manage Presley for more than two decades, arranged for drummer D. J. Fontana joined the lineup of Presley’s classic four in 1955, and RCA Victor bought his contract in a deal negotiated by Colonel Tom Parker. “Heartbreak Hotel,” Presley’s debut RCA Victor record, was released in January 1956 and became a number-one smash in the United States. RCA would sell 10 million Elvis Presley singles in a year. Presley became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll with a series of successful network television appearances and chart-topping records, though his performative style and promotion of the then-marginalized sound of African-Americans led to him being widely regarded as a threat to the moral well-being of White American youth.

Presley made his film debut in November 1956 with Love Me Tender. Presley was drafted into the military in 1958, but two years later began his music career with some of his most financially successful songs. He did, however, hold few performances and, aided by Parker, spent much of the 1960s recording Hollywood films and soundtrack albums, the majority of which were critically panned.

Following a seven-year hiatus from live performances, he returned in 1968 with the critically acclaimed television comeback special Elvis, which led to a long-running Las Vegas residency and a series of very profitable tours. Presley presented Aloha from Hawaii, the first concert by a solo artist to be aired around the world, in 1973. Years of prescription drug usage and poor eating habits had taken their toll on his health, and Elvis died abruptly in 1977 at the age of 42 at his Graceland home.

Presley is the best-selling solo music artist of all time, according to Guinness World Records, having sold over 500 million records worldwide. Pop, country, R&B, adult contemporary, and gospel were among his commercially successful genres. Presley has been admitted into many music halls of fame and has won three Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the age of 36. He has the most gold and platinum albums certified by the RIAA, the most albums charted on the Billboard 200, the most number-one albums by a solo artist on the UK Albums Chart, and the most number-one singles by any act on the UK Singles Chart. Donald Trump presented Presley with the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 2018.
