Marshall Bruce Mathers III, better known as Eminem, was born on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential rappers in history, Eminem broke barriers as a white MC in a predominantly Black genre and rewrote the rules of hip-hop with his explosive lyricism, controversial. Eminem did not have it easy, growing up in Detroit in the 80’s he had to deal with a lot of personal hardship. He never knew his father, who abandoned the family when Eminem was just an infant and was raised entirely by his mother, Deborah Nelson. His mom was unable to hold down a job so they moved frequently, spending a lot of time in public housing. He attended high school in Warren, Michigan before dropping out at the age of 17. 

As Eminem has risen into a rap superstar, he has been critical of his mom over the course of his career; stating publicly that she was a drug addict that subjected him to abuse. She denies these allegations and sued him in court in 1999 for 10 million dollars, before ultimately settling for 25k.
