Eurythmics – Biography, Songs, Albums, & Facts

Eurythmics Biography

The British pop duet Eurythmics was made up of Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox. Both of them were formerly members of the band The Tourists, which disbanded in 1980. In the Garden, the duo’s debut studio album, was released in 1981 to mixed reviews, but when Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), their follow-up album, was released in 1983, it received widespread critical acclaim. In addition to peaking at #6 in Australia and #2 in the UK, the title tune also peaked at #1 in Canada and the US Billboard Hot 100. Before breaking up in 1990, the duo released a number of successful singles and albums, including “Love Is a Stranger,” “There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart),” and “Here Comes the Rain Again.”

Lennox and Stewart first spoke in 1975 while Lennox was working at a café in London. They began performing together in the punk music group The Catch in 1976. The Catch only put out one single before becoming The Tourists in 1977. Lennox and Stewart also had a love relationship. Although The Tourists had some commercial success, they reportedly had a bad time.Peet Coombes was the group’s primary songwriter, but there were conflicts between members on a personal and creative level, and there were legal disputes with the band’s management, publishers, and record companies. Lennox and Stewart determined that their next endeavor should be far more adaptable and free from artistic compromise because they felt the fixed band line-up was an unsuitable vehicle to explore their experimental creative leanings. Although they desired the flexibility to explore electronics and the avant-garde, they were interested in making pop music.

Lennox and Stewart made the decision to become a band while tinkering with a little portable synthesizer in a Wagga Wagga, Australia hotel. They worked with Conny Plank to record their debut album in Cologne (who had produced the later Tourists sessions). In the Garden, an album that was released in October 1981, was the result of this. The band members of Can’s Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, Blondie’s Clem Burke on drums, D.A.F.’s Robert Görl, and flute Tim Wheater all contributed to the record, which blended psychedelic, krautrock, and electro pop influences. Guitarist Roger Pomphrey co-wrote a few of the tracks (later a TV director). The record didn’t do well in the marketplace (though the debut single “Never Gonna Cry Again” made the UK charts at No. 63).

Stewart rose to prominence as a record producer, while Lennox launched her solo career in 1992 with the release of her debut album Diva. Eurythmics came back together to make their ninth album, Peace, which was released in late 1999, after nearly a decade apart.

In 2005, they got back together to record the song “I’ve Got a Life” for the new compilation album, Ultimate Collection. An estimated 75 million recordings by Eurythmics have been sold globally. The pair was honored with the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 1999, the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1987, the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 1984, and induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Lennox and Stewart were both admitted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020. The group will be admitted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
