Faith No More Biography
Faith No More is a San Francisco-based American rock band that was established in 1979. The band went by the titles Sharp Young Men and afterwards Faith No Man before deciding on their current moniker in July 1983. The band’s longest-serving members are bassist Billy Gould, keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Roddy Bottum, and drummer Mike Bordin, who have all been with the group from its formation. The band went through multiple lineup changes early on, as well as some big changes later on. Gould, Bordin, Bottum, lead guitarist Jon Hudson, and vocalist/lyricist Mike Patton make up Faith No More’s current lineup.
Faith No More have a cult following thanks to their blend of heavy metal, funk, hip-hop, and progressive rock. The band had already had a slew of lead vocalists by the time they recorded their first album in 1985, including Courtney Love; their first, We Care a Lot, featured Chuck Mosley’s abrasive vocals but was propelled by Jim Martin’s metallic guitar. Introduce Yourself, Faith No More’s following album, was a more unified and remarkable effort; for the first time, the rap and metal parts didn’t sound like they were at odds.
Mosley was sacked by the rest of the band in 1988, and during the recording of their following album, The Real Thing, he was replaced by Bay Area vocalist Mike Patton. Patton was a better vocalist, able to switch between rapping and singing with ease, as well as giving a far more strange slant to the lyrics. The band had tightened its approach in addition to adding a new frontman, and the result was the genre-bending hit single “Epic,” which established them as a significant hard rock outfit.
However, following up on the success was more difficult. Faith No More followed up their breakout triumph with Angel Dust in 1992, one of the most complicated and befuddling albums ever released on a major label. Although it scored well in the charts, it lacked the crossover appeal of the previous album. When the band went on tour to promote the album, tensions between the band and Martin grew, with allegations that his guitar was taken out of some of the final mixes of Angel Dust. In early 1994, while the band was recording their fifth album, it was revealed that Martin had been sacked.
Mr. Bungle guitarist Trey Spruance helped Faith No More record King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime. Dean Menta took his place during tour preparations. Menta was only with the band for the duration of the King for a Day tour before being replaced by Jon Hudson for 1997’s Album of the Year. Faith No More announced their disbandment in April 1998, following the conclusion of the album’s supporting tour. Patton founded Fantômas with Melvins guitarist Buzz Osbourne, Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn, and former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, who had previously fronted Mr. Bungle and worked on avant-garde projects with John Zorn. Roddy Bottum’s band Imperial Teen went on to release their first album, Seasick, in 1996. Who Cares a Lot, a posthumous Faith No More retrospective, was released in late 1998.
Faith No More conducted a reunion tour in 2009, 11 years after their disbandment, performing festivals in Europe and sporadic American concerts; Jim Martin did not participate, but Jon Hudson and the rest of the band’s 1988 lineup did.As the band continued to play shows, rumors of a new studio album emerged, and in November 2014, the band verified the allegations with the release of a song, “Motherfucker,” labeled with their trademark humor. Faith No More released Sol Invictus in May 2015, their first album since 1997, on Reclamation Records, a label distributed by Patton’s Ipecac imprint; the band promoted the release with a lengthy tour of the United States, Europe, and South America.
