Faye Adams Biography

Faye Adams was an American singer who recorded and performed rhythm and blues and gospel music From the late 1940s through the early 1960s. Before departing from the music industry in the early 1950s, she had several chart hits. Her songs “It Hurts Me to My Heart” and “Shake a Hand” are well-known.

Faye was born in the city of Newark in the state of New Jersey. David Tuell, a gospel singer and important figure in the Church of God in Christ, was her father (COGIC). She began singing spirituals with her sisters when she was five years old, routinely appearing on Newark radio shows.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, she was a regular performer in New York nightclubs under her married name, Faye Scruggs. She was found while playing in Atlanta, Georgia, by vocalist Ruth Brown, who got her an audition with Atlantic Records’ bandleader Joe Morris. Morris hired her as a singer in 1952 after changing her name to Faye Adams and signing her to Herald Records. Morris’ song “Shake a Hand,” which topped the US Billboard R&B chart for 10 weeks in 1953 and reached number 22 on the US pop chart, was her first release. It received a gold disc after selling one million copies.

The “first obvious evidence of soul music appears with The “5” Royales, an ex-gospel group that moved to R&B, and in Faye Adams, whose “Shake A Hand” becomes an R&B standard,” according to the Acoustic Music organization. “I’ll Be True” (later covered by Bill Haley in 1954 and a teenaged Jackie DeShannon in 1957) and “It Hurts Me to My Heart” were two more R&B chart toppers for Adams in 1954.

She departed the Morris band around this time and became known as “Atomic Adams.” In 1955, she starred in the film Rhythm & Blues Revue. She switched to Imperial Records in 1957, but her financial success dwindled. Although she continued to record on different tiny labels until the early 1960s, she was seen as an aging recording artist whose time had passed. Faye was dubbed the “small gal with the big voice” by Alan Freed, and she performed with The Drifters, The Counts, and The Spaniels on the Rhythm and Blues Show Tours.

After a last-ditch effort to court jazz audiences with 1962’s Prestige release “Goodnight, My Love,” Faye walked away from secular music once and for all, returning to the gospel circuit and refusing to even discuss her classic R&B sides during the decades to come. By 1963, she had left the music business. In 1968, she remarried and returned to her gospel roots and family life in New Jersey as Fannie Jones. She co-wrote several gospel and secular songs with her husband Clarence E. Jones in the 1970s, and recorded a single, “Sinner Man,” on Savoy Records.

She was believed to be living in England when she got an award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in February 1998. It’s probable that she died on November 2, 2016, according to music historian and journalist Marv Goldberg, but this hasn’t been confirmed.
