Garbage Biography

Garbage is an American rock band from Madison, Wisconsin, formed in 1993. Since its start, the band’s lineup has been intact, consisting of Scottish singer Shirley Manson (vocals) and American musicians Duke Erikson (guitar, bass, keyboards), Steve Marker (guitar, keyboards), and Butch Vig (drums, production). The songwriting and production process include all four members. Garbage’s albums have sold over 17 million copies around the world. They are well known for their hit “Stupid Girl”.

The band’s self-titled debut album was highly hailed upon release, selling more than four million copies and earning double platinum certification in the UK, US, and Australia. From 1995 through 1996, it was followed by a succession of progressively successful singles, including “Stupid Girl” and “Only Happy When It Rains.”

Follow-up Version 2.0, which was released in 1998 after a year of development, was also a hit, topping the UK Albums Chart and earning two Grammy Award nominations. Garbage then went on to sing and co-produce the theme song for James Bond’s nineteenth film, The World Is Not Enough (1999).

Garbage debuted at No. 193 on the Billboard 200 on August 15, 1995. Instead of “Queer,” non-album tracks “Subhuman” and “Only Happy When It Rains” were released as singles in the United Kingdom to promote the album. The album debuted at No. 12 on the UK album chart. The album debuted at No. 5 in Australia. While Garbage launched their debut tour, “Queer” was swiftly released in the United Kingdom and Europe. Garbage was nominated for Best New Band and Best International Newcomer at the Brit Awards.

Throughout 1996, Garbage toured in support of their self-titled album. In North America, “Only Happy When It Rains” was released as a single; “Stupid Girl” was issued to promote European tour dates. MTV has recognized “Only Happy When It Rains” as a “Buzz clip,” ensuring substantial rotation on the network beginning February 13. On the Hot 100, “Only Happy” reached No. 55. In the UK, “Stupid Girl” garnered a lot of video and radio broadcast and reached No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart, marking the band’s first top 10 success and propelling the album to No. 6.

Garbage remade “Milk” with Tricky at a Chicago studio in May before supporting Smashing Pumpkins on their arena tour until keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin died of an overdose. On the Billboard Hot 100, “Stupid Girl” reached No. 24. Todd Terry’s Top 40 radio remix garnered a lot of playing.

In November 1996, Garbage Video, a compilation of the album’s promotional videos, was released. Garbage received two Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rock Song, with “Stupid Girl” receiving two nods for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group.

The modified version of “Milk,” which became the band’s second UK top 10 hit, was the album’s final single worldwide. On November 14, the band performed the song live at the MTV Europe Music Awards in London, where Garbage earned the Breakthrough award. In North America, Almo Sounds broadcasted “Supervixen” from the album to Modern Rock radio, while Mushroom Records released a remix of “#1 Crush” as a single from the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack in March 1997, which topped the Modern Rock Tracks chart for four weeks from the start of the year; the remix was also used as the theme for the TV show Hex. At the 1997 MTV Movie Awards, “#1 Crush” was nominated for Best Song From a Movie.

Garbage’s third album, Beautiful Garbage, received critical praise but fell short of its predecessors in terms of economic success. Garbage disbanded quietly during the creation of their fourth album Bleed Like Me, but reformed to finish the album, which was released in 2005 and reached a career-high number four in the United States. The band announced an indefinite break after cutting short their Bleed Like Me concert tour, emphasizing that they had not broken up but rather wanted to pursue various interests. The band’s sabbatical was briefly broken in 2007, when they recorded new songs for their greatest hits collection Absolute Garbage. The band reformed in 2011 and released Not Your Kind of People on their own label, Stunvolume, in 2012. It received favorable reviews. Their next album, Strange Little Birds, followed in 2016. Their seventh studio album, No Gods No Masters, was released in 2021.
