Grateful Dead Biography

Grateful Dead

Grateful Dead, byname the Dead, American rock band that was the incarnation of the improvisational psychedelic music that bloomed in San Francisco in the mid-1960s. Despite having hardly any radio singles, the Grateful Dead were one of the most successful touring bands in rock history. Lead guitarist and vocalist Jerry Garcia, guitarist and vocalist Bob Weir, keyboardist Ron (“Pigpen”) McKernan, bassist Phil Lesh, and drummer Bill Kreutzmann made up the band’s original lineup (also called Bill Sommers). Later members included vocalist Donna Godchaux, keyboardist Keith Godchaux, drummer Mickey Hart, keyboardist Tom Constanten, and keyboardist Brent Mydland.

The Grateful Dead came together in the early 1960s from jug bands and musicians in the San Francisco region before settling on their moniker in late 1965. As the Warlocks, they had previously appeared at the novelist Ken Kesey’s Acid Tests, which were celebrations of the psychedelic effects of the hallucinogen LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide, or “acid”). The Dead were an important component of the free live music that filled San Francisco during the Summer of Love in 1967, when the city attracted hippy baby boomers. They were remarkably varied, with backgrounds spanning from electronic experiments and jazz to bluegrass, blues, and folk.

The Dead were creating an underground community of devoted followers even before they made their debut album. By the late 1960s, the band had a huge following of admirers who traveled with them. They danced erratically while the band on stage rocked for hours, clad in flowing scarves and grandma gowns. They ultimately helped the Dead defeat conventional music industry wisdom, which held that an act needed hit records to be a well-liked performance attraction. The unmatched loyalty of the Deadheads made the band wealthy and remained until the Dead split up following the 1995 death of the group’s leader, Jerry Garcia.

The Grateful Dead’s amphetamine blues from 1967, Aoxomoxoa’s jagged explorations from 1969, and American Beauty’s melodic folk all appeared in their studio albums, but onstage was where the Dead’s talents and flaws were most evident.

Live/Dead (1969) and Grateful Dead Live (1971) were live albums that were their most commercially and critically successful releases. There is nothing like a Grateful Dead performance, declared a well-known bumper sticker. That was true, for better or worse. The Dead created a dynamic fusion of jazzy improvisation and rock instrumentation by pooling their diverse musical skills; nevertheless, due to their carefree and frequently drug-impaired stage personas, they frequently broke down.

In 1994, the Grateful Dead were admitted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The band changed its name to the Dead in 2003, dropping “Grateful” out of respect for Garcia, and the following year, former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes joined the group. However, personality issues emerged during the band’s 2004 tour season, leading to a four-year break.

The Dead came back together in 2008 to serve as the headlining act for a fundraiser for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. The performance’s popularity prompted a tour the following year.

For the Fare Thee Well tour, which celebrated the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary and served as their final show as the Dead, Weir, Lesh, Kreutzmann, and Hart reunited in 2015. Trey Anastasio, a Phish guitarist and vocalist, played lead guitar and contributed vocals, and Hornsby was joined on keyboards by Jeff Chimenti, who had previously played with Weir and Lesh in other bands. The Dead played three shows over the course of the Fourth of July weekend at Soldier Field in Chicago, the location of Garcia’s final concert, following two performances in Santa Clara, California.

Nearly ten years to the day after Garcia last led the band, the final performance took place on July 5. But a month later, Weir, Kreutzmann, and Hart revealed they were forming a new group called Dead & Company with guitarist and singer John Mayer, which also featured bassist Oteil Burbridge and keyboardist Chimenti. Late in 2015, the group started to perform.
