Heart Biography

The American rock band Heart was established in 1967 in the city of Seattle, Washington, under the name The Army. In the subsequent two years, they decided to alter their name to Hocus Pocus. In the year that followed, they decided to alter their name to White Heart, and then in 1973, they decided to change it one more time, this time to Heart. In the middle of the 1970s, founding members Roger Fisher (guitar) and Steve Fossen (bass guitar) were joined by Ann Wilson (lead vocals and flute), Nancy Wilson (rhythm guitar, vocals), Michael Derosier (drums), and Howard Leese (guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals) to form Heart’s lineup for its initial success period in the middle to late 1970s. The band‘s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 was completed with the participation of these essential members.

The band Heart grew to prominence with music that was influenced not only by folk music but also by hard rock and heavy metal. The band went through a significant lineup shift as the 1970s gave way to the 1980s. By the time 1982 rolled around, Fisher, Fossen, and Derosier were all gone, and they were succeeded by Mark Andes (bass) and Denny Carmassi (drums). The band staged a return in the middle of the 1980s, which boosted big radio singles that continued into the 1990s. Despite the fact that the band’s popularity declined during the initial years with the new lineup, the band remained to be successful far into the 1990s. The band Heart broke up in 1998, but since then they have reformed numerous times to continue performing and recording; the only members who have remained consistent are the Wilson sisters. The songs “Magic Man” (1975), “Crazy on You” (1976), “Barracuda” (1977), “What About Love” (1985), and “Never” (1985), as well as the number one hits “These Dreams” (1986) and “Alone” (1990), are among the US Top 40 singles that Heart has released.

Heart has sold over 35 million records worldwide, had 20 number-one singles and seven number-one albums, and received four Grammy nominations. The band charted singles and top ten albums on the Billboard charts in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2010s, a four-decade streak for a female-fronted band.

Heart was ranked 57th on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock” in 2008, and Ann and Nancy Wilson were ranked 40th (in 1999) on VH1’s “100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll.” Ann Wilson was ranked 78th on Hit Parader’s list of the “Greatest Heavy Metal Vocalists of All Time” in 2006. In recognition of their songwriting careers, the Wilson sisters received ASCAP’s Founders Award in 2009.

Heart was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the 2012 class in 2011. After being passed over the first time, the band was nominated again the following year and was named to the 2013 class on December 11, 2012. The Wilson sisters were the first women to front a hard-rock band, and their Hall of Fame page describes them as “pioneers… inspiring women to pick up an electric guitar or start a band.”

They have had albums that debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart in each of the decades that followed the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Both VH1 and Ultimate Classic Rock listed Heart as number 57 on their respective lists of the “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock” and “Top 100 Classic Rock Artists,” respectively.
