Chart Performance: Pop (#1); 1990

Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

In 1990, Wilson Phillips emerged as one of the year’s most successful new acts. Comprised of Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson, and Chynna Phillips, the trio combined strong vocal harmonies with polished pop production. Their breakthrough single was Hold On.

Written by Chynna Phillips and Glen Ballard, the song served as the lead single from the group’s self-titled debut album. Produced by Ballard, the recording featured layered harmonies and a bright, radio-friendly arrangement.

Released in early 1990, Hold On climbed to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for one week. It became one of the best-selling singles of the year and established Wilson Phillips as a major pop presence.

The lyric centers on encouragement and personal responsibility. Rather than focusing on romance, the song urges listeners to remain strong during difficult moments. The repeated refrain reinforces its message of patience and self-confidence.

Hold On earned a Grammy nomination and remains the group’s signature recording, marking one of the defining pop hits of the early 1990s.
