Iggy Pop, whose real name is James Newell Osterberg Jr., is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He was the vocalist and lyricist for proto-punk band The Stooges, who began in 1967 and have disbanded and reformed numerous times since. He was dubbed the “Godfather of Punk.” He is well known for his songs “The Passenger” and “Lust For Life”.
James Newell Osterberg Jr. was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on April 21, 1947. Osterberg began his musical career as a drummer in a variety of high school bands in Ann Arbor, Michigan, including The Iguanas, who recorded several hits in the 1960s, including Bo Diddley‘s “Mona.” He subsequently joined the Prime Movers (with brothers Dan and Michael Erlewine), a local blues-style band, when he was 18 years old.Because he was a member of The Iguanas, the Prime Movers dubbed him “Iggy.” The two years he spent in the band, according to author Jim Ambrose, exposed him to “art, politics, and experimentation.”
In their first incarnation, the Stooges played a rough, primitive brand of rock and roll and developed a reputation for their confrontational concerts, which often included acts of self-mutilation by Pop.
Beginning with the Stooges’ album Raw Power in 1973, he maintained a lengthy collaborative and personal association with David Bowie throughout his career. Both musicians moved to West Berlin to recover from their drug problems, and Pop launched his solo career by collaborating with Bowie on the 1977 albums The Idiot and Lust for Life, with Pop contributing most of the lyrics. He has been noted for his flamboyant and unpredictable theatrical antics, creative lyrics, and distinctive voice throughout his career. He popularized the stage-dive as one of the first entertainers to do one. Pop, who is known for his bare-chested performances, also engaged in theatrical antics such as rolling around in shattered glass and exposing himself to the audience.

Pop’s song “China Girl” became more well-known because co-writer David Bowie re-recorded it and released it as the second single from his most financially successful album, Let’s Dance (1983). Throughout his career, Bowie re-recorded and performed numerous of Pop’s songs.
Pop has remained a cultural icon and a huge influence on a wide range of performers in a variety of genres despite his minimal monetary success. Raw Power, the Stooges’ debut album, has influenced musicians such as Sex Pistols, the Smiths, and Nirvana.
His solo album The Idiot has been credited as a key influence on a number of post-punk, electronic, and industrial bands, including Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, and Joy Division, and was dubbed “re-affirmation that our suspicions were correct: the man is a genius” by Siouxsie Sioux. In 2010, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Stooges. Pop was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in January 2020.
