Chart Performance: Pop (#1); 1966

Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

In 1966, The Monkees were a newly launched television act when I’m A Believer became their breakthrough hit. Created for an NBC sitcom about a struggling rock band, the group quickly moved beyond its TV origins and into the pop mainstream.

The song was written by Neil Diamond, who was establishing himself as a leading Brill Building songwriter. Although Diamond recorded the tune first, producer Jeff Barry selected it for The Monkees. Featuring lead vocals by Micky Dolenz, the track was recorded in New York with session musicians.

Released in November 1966, I’m A Believer reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for seven weeks. It became the best-selling single of 1967 in the United States and topped charts internationally.

The lyric centers on a narrator who once doubted love but changes his outlook after meeting the right person. The straightforward message, paired with an upbeat arrangement and strong vocal performance, helped make the record one of the defining pop hits of the decade.
