Inxs Biography

INXS was an Australian rock band that was formed in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales, under the name The Farriss Brothers. Their name is a phonetic play on the phrase “in excess.” Garry Gary Beers on bass, Andrew Farriss on keyboards and main composer, Jon Farriss on drums, Tim Farriss on guitar, Michael Hutchence on lead vocals and major lyricist, and Kirk Pengilly on guitar and saxophone were the original members of the band. Hutchence was the lead singer of INXS for twenty years, and his captivating stage appearance made him the band’s primary focus during that time. After becoming well-known for its new wave/pop sound, the band eventually transitioned into a tougher pub rock style that included funk and dance elements in their music.

“Original Sin” was the first song by INXS to reach number one in Australia, where it was released in 1984. Later on, the band would go on to achieve international success in the middle to late 1980s and early 1990s with the release of the successful albums Listen Like Thieves, Kick, and X, as well as the singles “What You Need,” “Need You Tonight” (the band’s only US number-one single), “Devil Inside,” “Never Tear Us Apart,” “Suicide Blonde,” and “New Sensation.”

After Hutchence passed away on November 22, 1997, INXS performed with a number of different guest singers, then beginning in the year 2000, Jon Stevens took over as the band’s lead singer and began touring and recording.

During the month of May 1980, INXS issued their very first single, “Simple Simon”/”We Are the Vegetables,” in both Australia and France. On Simon Townsend’s Wonder World, the track had its first appearance on television for the first time. Recording for their debut album, INXS, took place at Trafalgar Studios in Annandale, which is located in the city of Sydney. At the demand of Murphy, the band and Duncan McGuire (ex-Ayers Rock) worked together to co-produce the album, and all of the songs on the album are credited to the entire band. [18][19] They were given a budget of $10,000 by Deluxe to record the album; hence, in order to stay within that budget, they had to record from midnight till morning, typically after having performed one or more times earlier that night. The album was first made available to the public in October of 1980. This album reached its highest position in the Top 30 of the Kent Music Report’s chart for Australian albums, and it was led by the single “Just Keep Walking,” which became the band’s first single to chart in the Top 40 in Australia. It took the album quite a few years before it was certified gold, which indicates that it has sold more than 35,000 copies.

In 2005, members of INXS took part in the reality television series Rock Star: INXS. The show led to the eventual selection of J.D. Fortune as the band’s new lead singer, and it was broadcast in Canada.

In 2011, Ciaran Gribbin, an Irish singer-songwriter, took over for Fortune as the band’s lead singer. INXS indicated that the performance that they were giving on the 11th of November, 2012 would be their very last, however, they did not announce that the band would be disbanding permanently at that time.

INXS entered into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2001 after winning six awards from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), including three wins for “Best Group” in the years 1987, 1989, and 1992.

INXS is one of the most successful musical acts in Australian history, as evidenced by the fact that they have moved more than 80 million albums worldwide.
