Jackie began his career as a gospel singer. He rose to prominence as a member of Billy Ward and His Dominoes, an R&B singing group. In 1957, he went solo and had over 50 hit singles in the R&B, pop, soul, doo-wop, and easy listening genres. There were 16 Top 10 R&B hits, with six of them reaching number one. He has 14 top 20 pop hits on the Billboard Hot 100, with six of them reaching the top ten. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame after his death in 1987.

He was ranked No. 69 on Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list in 2004, and No. 26 on the list of the greatest singers of all time.

He was also a successful Golden Gloves boxer as a youth. Jackie’s mother is said to have asked him to stop boxing, thus he chose a different path for himself. Wilson began his career in music in 1953, when he joined Billy Ward and his Dominoes (also known as Billy Ward and the Dominoes) as the group’s lead singer, replacing Clyde McPhatter.

Jackie’s debut solo song, “Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Want to Meet),” was published in 1957. With “To Be Loved,” he made it to the pop charts the following year. Wilson’s first No. 1 R&B hit, “Lonely Teardrops,” was released in December 1958, and it also charted in the Top 10 on the pop charts.

He continued to ride a wave of popularity, making the charts with a variety of songs over and over again. With “Night,” a tune based on an aria from Camille Saint-Saens’ Samson and Delilah, he demonstrated his love for opera. Wilson’s ballad “Doggin’ Around” hit the top of the R&B charts the same year, and his 1963 tune “Baby Workout” got listeners dancing and became another R&B chart-topper for Wilson. “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” was his final major song in 1967.

Jackie fainted on stage in a New Jersey nightclub on September 29, 1975, while playing “Lonely Teardrops.” He had suffered a heart attack, it was later discovered (some reports say it was a stroke). Wilson fell into a coma and was never able to wake up. He was residing in a retirement facility in New Jersey by 1977, where he required round-the-clock care.

He died on January 21, 1984, in a hospital in Mount Holly, New Jersey, after eight years in a coma. He was only 49 years old at the time. Jackie was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame three years later. Prince, Michael Jackson, and Elvis Presley are all said to have been influenced by him.
