Jackson Browne Biography

Jackson Browne, whose full name is Clyde Jackson Browne, is a German-born American singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist who helped define the 1970s singer-songwriter movement.

Browne grew up in Los Angeles and Orange County, California, to a musical family with deep roots in southern California. Jackson was born on October 9, 1948, in Heidelberg, Germany, to a musical family with deep roots in southern California. His passion for music prompted him to join the budding Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and work as a backing musician for Nico of the Velvet Underground and Tim Buckley in New York City in the late 1960s.

Before recording his eponymous debut album in 1972 (including the Top Ten hit “Doctor My Eyes”), he was first recognized as a songwriter, and his works were recorded by artists such as Tom Rush, the Byrds, and Linda Ronstadt. Browne wrote numerous songs for the Eagles, including “Take It Easy,” which he co-authored with a group of musicians that established Los Angeles as the home of country rock.

Browne constructed a protagonist whose journey for love, understanding, and justice was a mythic extension of his own experience, influenced by Bob Dylan and in the style of Jack Kerouac and Thomas Wolfe.

Browne had million-selling hits with The Pretender (1976) and the live album Running on Empty (1978); the title tracks from both recordings are among his best-known songs. After winning a cult following with his first three albums—the last two, including the highly regarded Late for the Sky—Browne had million-selling hits with The Pretender (1976) and the live album Running on Empty (1978); the title tracks from both recordings are among his best-known songs. From romantic folk rock ballads to up-tempo rock and reggae, his musical approach was diverse.

His music took a political turn in the 1980s, reflecting his involvement, particularly on Lives in the Balance (1986), which demonstrated his ardent opposition to US policy in Central America. Though political involvement and political songs remained crucial to his identity in the 1990s and early 2000s, his albums primarily represented a return to more personal issues.

Browne is well-known for his environmental, human rights, and arts education advocacy. He is a co-founder of the organizations Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) and Nukefree.org, as well as a member of the Ocean Elders, an ocean advocacy organization.

He was the fourth recipient of the John Steinbeck Award in 2002, given to artists whose works represent the environmental and social values that the famous California-born author held dear. He’s won the LEAF award for Lifetime Environmental Achievement in the Fine Arts from Duke University, as well as the Chapin-World Hunger Year and NARM Harry Chapin Humanitarian Awards.

Occidental College in Los Angeles awarded Jackson an honorary Doctorate of Music in 2004 for “a unique musical career that has successfully united a profoundly personal craft with a broader vision of social justice.”

Browne was elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. On Solo Acoustic Vol. 1 (2005) and Solo Acoustic Vol. 2 (2008), a set of live recordings of several of his signature tunes, he reverted to his coffeehouse folk roots. In 2008, he also published Time the Conqueror, a collection of new songs. Browne’s acoustic tour of Spain with Lindley in 2006 is documented on the live album Love Is Strange (2010).

Standing in the Breach, his second studio album, is a well-received combination of personal and political songs. In the year 2021, the film Downhill from Everywhere was released.
