James Joseph Brown was an American singer, dancer, musician, record producer, and bandleader. He is known by the honorific nicknames “Godfather of Soul,” “Mr. Dynamite,” and “Soul Brother No. 1” for being the fundamental founder of funk music and a major figure in twentieth-century music. He affected the development of various music genres throughout the course of a 50-year career. On January 23, 1986, Brown was one of the first ten inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which was held in New York for the first time.

Brown was born in Barnwell, South Carolina, on May 3, 1933. In Toccoa, Georgia, he began his career as a gospel singer. In the mid-1950s, he rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of the Famous Flames, a rhythm and blues singing group created by Bobby Byrd.] Brown established a reputation as a dramatic live performer with the Famous Flames and his backup band, also referred to as the James Brown Band or the James Brown Orchestra, thanks to the popular ballads “Please, Please, Please” and “Try Me.” With the live album Live at the Apollo and smash singles like “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” “I Got You (I Feel Good),” and “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” his popularity peaked in the 1960s.

Brown transitioned from a blues and gospel-based continuum to a profoundly “Africanized” approach to music-making in the late 1960s, stressing stripped-down interlocking rhythms that inspired the birth of funk music. During this time, Brown released two additional successful live albums, Live at the Garden (1967) and Live at the Apollo, Volume II (1968), as well as a 1968 television special, James Brown: Man to Man. His music empire grew in tandem with his influence in the music industry. Brown’s quest for financial and artistic freedom intensified as his music empire developed. In 1970, Brown purchased WEBB in Baltimore.

After forming the J.B.s in the early 1970s, Brown had firmly established the funk sound with recordings like “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” and “The Payback.” He was also known for socially conscious songs, such as the 1968 hit “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud.” Brown performed and recorded until his death in 2006 from pneumonia.

Brown continued to make songs in the 1990s, and in the 2000s, he used his celebrity to perform in a variety of entertainment and sporting events. Brown’s final broadcast performance was in November 2006, when he was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame, before his death the following month. Brown was set to record a duet with Annie Lennox on the song “Vengeance” for her new album Venus, which was released in 2007, before his death.

Brown died on Christmas Day 2006, at the age of 73, of congestive heart failure caused by pneumonia complications. In 2019, a CNN and other journalists investigation led to the conclusion that Brown had been murdered.
