Jamiroquai Biography

Jamiroquai is a tremendously renowned acid jazz/jazz-funk band from the United Kingdom, formed in 1992. They were well-known as part of the acid jazz scene in the 1990s, alongside bands like Galliano, the James Taylor Quartet, Corduroy, and the Brand New Heavies. The band has sold over 35 million albums worldwide and is likely most known for their frontman, Jay Kay, who is known for his unique dance style and outrageous headwear.

Jay Kay (vocals), Toby Smith (keyboards), Nick Van Gelder (drums), Wallis Buchanan (digeridoo), and Stuart Zender (guitar) founded Jamiroquai (bass). The band’s lineup has changed multiple times over the years, but Jay Kay and drummer Derick McKenzie remain the essential members. Jay Kay is often regarded as the band’s center point, to the point where many people believe that ‘Jamiroquai’ is the name of a solo act.

The Acid Jazz label released Jamiroquai’s debut track, “When You Gonna Learn?” in 1992. Jamiroquai signed an eight-album agreement with Sony BMG Music Entertainment as a result of the single’s success. Emergency on Planet Earth, their first album with a big label, was released in 1993.

The Return of the Space Cowboy was released the next year, with the lead single, ‘Space Cowboy,’ gaining a lot of mainstream radio and press attention.

Despite their enormous success in the United Kingdom and Europe, the band’s international breakthrough did not come until the publication of Travelling Without Moving in 1996. ‘Virtual Insanity’ and ‘Cosmic Girl’ were two more major success singles for Jamiroquai from the album. The unique video directed by Jonathan Glazer contributed to the success of ‘Virtual Insanity.’

In 2003, The Commodores, The Pointer Sisters, and Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson were requested to contribute to a collection for the ‘Late Night Tales’ series, which comprised recordings from their influences.

Jamiroquai’s next studio album, Synkronized, was released in 1999, followed by their fifth album, A Funk Odyssey, in 2001. Despite the fact that the band’s sound had altered so much at this point – with critics claiming they had lost the sound that made them distinctive and unique – the lead single from the fifth album, ‘Little L,’ achieved number one on numerous international charts.

Dynamite, Jamiroquai’s sixth album, was released in the summer of 2005 and reached number three on the UK charts. The band ended their contract with Sony the following year by releasing High Times: Singles 1992-2006, a greatest hits collection. According to Jay Kay, they only released this compilation to fulfill their contractual commitment to Sony and get out of their contract.

In 2006, Channel 4 broadcasted Jamiroquai’s live concert at Abbey Road Studios, as well as performances by Damien Rice and the Goo Goo Dolls. Jamiroquai got a deal with Columbia Records after leaving Sony.

Although drummer Derrick McKenzie stated in an interview that over 40 tracks had been written and recorded, recording for a new album began in 2008. As of July 2010, only one new track from the band had been performed live. Jay Kay stated in April 2010 that the band would be supporting Stevie Wonder. The new album’s release date was eventually set for November 2010, and the title was revealed to be Rock Dust Light Star. The lead single ‘White Knuckle Ride’ debuted on the Chris Moyles Show (presented that day by Vernon Kay).
