Jeff Buckley Biography

Jeff Buckley was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist, widely known for his stirring cover of the Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah.”

He was born in Anaheim, California, on November 17, 1966, into a musical family. Jeff’s father, Tim Buckley, was a well-known folk singer, and his mother, Mary Guibert, was a professionally educated musician. Jeff only met his father once, when he was eight years old and they spent a week together. His father died of a drug overdose when he was 28 years old, less than a year after the two met. Jeff had a tight relationship with his stepfather, Ron Moorhead, who gave him his first Led Zeppelin CD, which had a huge impact on his future as a performer.

Jeff attended the Los Angeles Musicians Institute after graduating from high school, where he performed in a number of cover bands. He played a variety of concerts and created songs for the following few years as he searched for a direction. He traveled to New York City in 1990, where he eventually joined the band Gods and Monsters, which included Gary Lucas, a former Captain Beefheart guitarist. But it wasn’t long before he departed the band to pursue a solo career. Sin-é, a modest East Village café, became his home away from home. In 1993, he published a four-song EP called Live at Sin-é, which featured some of his performances.

He embarked on his first solo tour of small venues in promotion of the live record in early 1994, and his first studio album, Grace, was released in the summer of 1994. On August 23, the same day he and his band began their European tour in Dublin.

The album, Grace, has been praised time and over again in the years since its release, and it appears to be gaining traction with each passing year. Jeff’s version of “Hallelujah” was voted No. 259 on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list in 2004, and No. 1 on Mojo magazine’s “Modern Classics: 100 Greatest Albums Of Mojo’s Lifetime” list in 2006. David Bowie gave Grace a special nod when he said Grace would be the only record he would want if stranded on a desert island.

Jeff began recording his second album, which he planned to call My Sweetheart the Drunk, in the summer of 1996. He had then relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, and the recording sessions took place in both New York City and Memphis. Jeff and a companion changed pathways on the road to the recording studio on May 29, 1997, the night his band was arriving from New York to record the final studio recordings.

Jeff went into the river and began swimming after stopping at the Wolf River channel of the Mississippi River. The unfortunate event happened, he was swept under by the wake of a passing boat and drowned. Six days later, his body was discovered after being spotted by a riverboat passenger.

Jeff’s mother began working with Columbia Records on potential releases soon after his death, the first of which was Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk (1998), a double-disc collection of unfinished songs Jeff had recently recorded.

Two years later, Mystery White Boy, a live CD, was released, along with the DVD/VHS Jeff Buckley: Live in Chicago. Live @ Sin-é, a two-disc album of his early live performances at the East Village café, was published in 2003.

In an interview with The Guardian in 2002, his mother spoke about managing her son’s legacy, “I have to compartmentalize myself quite a bit. There’s the musician side of me, and the businesswoman side – and the mother side of me which never turns off. But the emotions are things I have to kinda set aside. That’s why I take good counsel. I’ve always involved people from Jeff’s band. It makes it a lot easier, especially if there are any critical blows. But the work we’ve done so far has been well received.”
