Jerry Lee Lewis Biography

Jerry Lewis was an American comedian, actor, singer, director, producer, writer and humanitarian. Jerry, dubbed “The King of Comedy,” is widely recognized as one of the most important American cultural personalities of the twentieth century. His contributions to comedy and charity, as well as his publicized personal life, made him a global figure in pop culture over an eight-decade career. He made his professional debut in 1946 as a member of the legendary Martin and Lewis duo with vocalist Dean Martin, with whom he toured until 1956. “Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody” and “The Navy Gets The Gravy But The Army Gets The Beans” are two of his most well-known tunes.

He was born Joseph Levitch on March 16, 1926, to a Jewish family in Newark, New Jersey. By the age of 15, he had perfected his “Record Act,” in which he mimed song lyrics while a phonograph played offstage. He got a job at a burlesque house in Buffalo, but his show was a flop, and he couldn’t get any further bookings. To make ends meet, Jerry worked for Suzanne Pleshette’s father Gene as a soda jerk and a theater usher at the Paramount Theater and Loew’s Capitol Theater, both in New York City.

Max Coleman, an experienced burlesque comedian who had previously worked with Jerry’s father, pushed him to try again. Jerry’s mime performance was so well received by the crowd at Brown’s Hotel in Loch Sheldrake, New York, the following summer, that Irving Kaye, a Borscht Belt comedian, became his manager and guardian for Borscht Belt engagements. He was turned down for military service during WWII due to a cardiac murmur.

Jerry was 19 when he met 27-year-old vocalist Dean Martin at the Glass Hat Club in New York City in 1945, and the two played together until July 25, 1946, when they debuted as Martin and Lewis at Atlantic City’s 500 Club. Both s and Martin went on to have successful solo careers after their collaboration ended with their final nightclub show on July 24, 1956, and neither would remark on the split or seek a reunion.

The 81st Academy Awards, 50 Years of Movies & Music (a Michel Legrand special), Till Luck Do Us Part 2 (2013), The Talk, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The World Over with Raymond Arroyo, The Trust (2016), his final film Max Rose (2016), WTF with Marc Maron, and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee were among his last appearances. He has his motion picture star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6821 Hollywood Blvd.

Jerry had a variety of chronic health issues, ailments, and addictions associated with aging as well as a back injury incurred in a humorous pratfall. He died on August 20, 2017, at the age of 91, at his residence in Las Vegas, Nevada. End-stage heart disease and peripheral artery disease were the causes. Jerry was cremated after his death. He clearly disinherited his children from his first marriage and their children in his will, which he bequeathed to his second wife of 34 years, SanDee Pitnick, and their daughter.

Jerry had an overall of more than 55 awards, nominations, and other honors that keep his name shining till today.
