Korn Biography

Korn (stylized as Kon or occasionally as KoRn) is a Bakersfield, California-based metal band that formed in 1993. The band is credited with establishing the nu metal genre and popularizing it. Korn’s current lineup includes founding members James “Munky” Shaffer (guitar), Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu (bass), Brian “Head” Welch (guitar, backup vocals), and Jonathan Davis (lead vocals, bagpipes), who replaced the band’s initial drummer, David Silveria, in 2007. “Freak On a Leash” and “Coming Undone” are two of their most popular songs.

In 1993, Korn released Neidermayer’s Mind, a demo tape that was given out free to record companies and on demand to members of the public. Korn began recording their debut album with Ross Robinson in May 1994. By the end of June 1994, the recording was completed. Korn released a self–titled album on Immortal Records, an Epic imprint label, on October 11, 1994, which reached number one on the Heatseekers Albums chart and finally reached number 72 on the Billboard 200 in February 1996. The album earned favorable reviews from critics and is credited with launching the new wave of metal. The album not only launched the nu metal genre, but it also launched the career of record producer Ross Robinson. Other bands including Slipknot, Coal Chamber, and Limp Bizkit were influenced by it.

Life Is Peachy was released in 1996. Follow the Leader (1998) and Issues (1999), both of which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, were the band’s first mainstream hits. Untouchables (2002), Take a Look in the Mirror (2003), and See You on the Other Side (2003) continued the band’s popular success (2005).

In 2004, the band issued Greatest Hits Vol. 1, a compilation album that covered a decade of singles and marked the end of their recording contract with Immortal Records and Epic Records. They joined with Virgin Records in 2005 and released See You on the Other Side and an untitled album in 2007. The Paradigm Shift (2013) was issued by Prospect Park and Caroline Records, while Korn III: Remember Who You Are (2010) and The Path of Totality (2011) were released by Roadrunner Records. The Nothing was released on September 13, 2019 through Roadrunner Records, following The Serenity of Suffering. Requiem, their most recent album, was released on February 4, 2022 by Loma Vista Recordings.

Korn has sold over 40 million records globally by 2021. Twelve of the band’s official albums have charted in the Billboard 200’s top ten, with eight of them reaching the top five. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has awarded seven official releases platinum certification: two are double platinum, one is triple platinum, one is five times platinum, and two are gold. Korn has released seven music videos and seven video albums. “Blind,” “Got the Life,” “Freak on a Leash,” “Falling Away from Me,” “Here to Stay,” “Did My Time,” “Twisted Transistor,” “Coming Undone,” and “Get Up!” are just a few of the band’s 48 singles. Korn has received two Grammy Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards out of a total of eleven nominations.
