Lauryn Hill Biography

Lauryn Noelle Hill is an actress, singer, rapper, and composer from the United States. She is widely recognized as one of the finest rappers of all time, as well as one of her generation’s most influential musicians. Hill is recognized for breaking down boundaries for female rappers, popularizing melodic rapping, and popularizing hip hop and neo soul. She is best known as a member of the Fugees and for her solo album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill (1998), which went on to become one of the greatest-selling albums of all time. Hill has received numerous awards, including eight Grammy Awards, the most ever earned by a female rapper.

Lauryn Noelle Hill was born in Newark, New Jersey, on May 26, 1975. Hill appeared in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit as a lead actress (1993). She later joined Pras Michel and his cousin Wyclef Jean to form the group The Fugees. The trio recorded two albums, including The Score (1996), which featured Hill on lead vocals and spawned the smash single “Killing Me Softly.” It was nominated for a Grammy Honor for Best Rap Album, and she became the first woman to win the award. Hill then worked on “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)” with Nas and wrote “A Rose Is Still a Rose” for Aretha Franklin. Her rocky relationship with Jean caused the band to break up in 1997, just as she started working on her solo album.

The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill (1998), Hill’s sole solo studio album, received critical praise. The tracks “Ex-Factor” and “Lost Ones” are included. It opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the United States, with the biggest first-week sales for a female debut album in the twentieth century. The lead single, “Doo Wop (That Thing),” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first female rapper and the first artist to debut at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 with their first entries. Hill received ten nominations for the 41st Grammy Prizes, breaking the record for the most nominations for a woman in a single night, while also winning five awards, including Album of the Year, making her the first hip hop artist to win the honor. The album was later added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. She eventually faded from public view, disenchanted with the music industry and suffering from fame’s pressures. Hill released the new-material live album MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 in 2002, which was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Hill’s future activities have included festival appearances and the release of songs on a regular basis. Hill was named seventh on Billboard’s “10 Best Rappers of All Time” list in 2015, making her the only woman on the list. She was rated one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Consequence of Sound. Hill holds multiple Guinness World Records, including being the first female rapper to be certified as a Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). As a solo artist and a member of the Fugees, she was included in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs and Albums list. Hill has been inducted into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame and has earned the NAACP President’s Award.
