Chart Performance: Pop (#1) and R&B (#1); 1978

Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

By 1978, Chic had established themselves as one of disco’s most sophisticated acts, guided by guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards. That year, they released Le Freak, a single that would become the group’s biggest commercial success.

The song was written by Rodgers and Edwards after they were denied entry to Studio 54 on New Year’s Eve in 1977, despite being invited by Grace Jones. Frustrated by the incident, the pair channeled their reaction into a song built around a driving groove. The original refrain was later revised into the now-famous “Freak out.”

Released in late 1978, Le Freak climbed to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also topped the R&B chart. It became one of the best-selling singles in Atlantic Records history at the time.

Built on Edwards’ prominent bass line and Rodgers’ rhythmic guitar, the track reflects Chic’s polished approach to disco. The lyric centers on celebration and dance-floor release, encouraging listeners to “freak out” and enjoy the moment.

Le Freak became Chic’s signature hit and remains one of the defining recordings of the disco era.
