Liz Phair Biography

“I am a feminist, and I define myself: Be yourself, because if you can get away with it, that is the ultimate feminist act.”-Liz Phair.

Elizabeth Clark, known as “Liz” Phair is an American singer, songwriter and a guitarist. She is known for her song “Why Can’t I?”.

She was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on April 17, 1967, and reared mostly in the Chicago region. She attempted to launch a musical career in San Francisco after graduating from Oberlin College in 1990, but instead moved to Chicago, where she began self-releasing audio cassettes under the name Girly-Sound. The tapes led to a recording contract with Matador Records, an independent record company.

Liz’s debut studio album, Exile in Guyville, was released in 1993 to critical acclaim and was named one of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Whip-Smart (1994), which earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, and Whitechocolatespaceegg (1995) followed (1998). Liz’s fourth album, Liz Phair (2003), released on Capitol Records ten years after her first, shifted to pop rock, gaining her a wider audience but upsetting critics; the single “Why Can’t I?” peaked at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.

She departed Capitol after the release of her fifth album, Somebody’s Miracle (2005), and released her sixth album, Funstyle, on her own in 2010. Matador Records stated in 2018 that a retrospective set for Liz’s debut album Exile in Guyville would be released, featuring remastered tracks from her initial Girly Sound demo tapes. Soberish, her seventh studio album, was released in 2021. She had sold over three million records globally as of 2011.

She began dating film editor Jim Staskauskas in 1994. On March 11, 1995, the couple married, and their son James Nicholas Staskauskas was born on December 21, 1996.

Liz and Staskauskas divorced in 2001, and Liz moved to Los Angeles, California, after selling her property in Chicago’s Lincoln Park district. Liz is currently based in Manhattan Beach, California.

She was adopted as an infant by parents John and Nancy Phair. She has one older brother, also adopted. On being adopted, She has said: “My parents were very responsible … They were perfect about it … I’ve never tried to find [my biological] parents. My friend who was adopted from the same home requested information and got back a four-page letter about her mother’s life. She said it was jaw-dropping.” Liz is a feminist, and kept her maiden name in marriage. She ranked #94 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Women of Rock N Roll, and her song “Why Can’t I?” was used in the movie 13 Going on 30 (2004). Coincidentally, she shares a birthday with the star of the movie, Jennifer Garner.

Liz signed a two-book publishing deal with Random House, according to a Billboard profile from April 2018. On October 8, 2019, the first of two planned memoirs, Horror Stories, was released. Horror Stories received mostly positive reviews, with several critics praising her writing abilities and the book’s brutal honesty. Fairy Tales will be the title of her second memoir.
