Lynyrd Skynyrd Biography

American rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd was founded in Jacksonville, Florida. The band‘s original line-up included Ronnie Van Zant on lead vocals, Gary Rossington on guitar, Allen Collins on guitar, Larry Junstrom on bass guitar, and Bob Burns on drums. Before settling on “Lynyrd Skynyrd” in 1969, the band spent five years performing in small venues under several aliases and with many lineup changes. After deciding on a lineup that comprised guitarist Ed King, pianist Billy Powell, and bassist Leon Wilkeson, the band issued its debut album in 1973. In 1974, Burns resigned and Artimus Pyle took his place. King departed in 1975, and Steve Gaines took his place in 1976. With songs like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird,” the group helped popularize Southern rock during its heyday in the 1970s. The band’s career abruptly ended on October 20, 1977, when their chartered jet crashed, killing Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines while critically injuring the rest of the group. The band had previously released five studio albums and one live album.

Three teens named Ronnie Van Zant, Bob Burns, and Gary Rossington met while competing on opposing baseball teams in Jacksonville, Florida, in the summer of 1964. After Burns was hurt by a ball hit by Van Zant one afternoon, the trio made the decision to jam together. The Rolling Stones‘ “Time Is on My Side” was played as they set up shop in the carport of Burns’ parents’ home. As soon as they heard it, they decided they liked it and would start a band. Allen Collins, the band’s guitarist, originally bolted on his bicycle and hid under a tree when he saw Van Zant arriving into his driveway, but they soon approached him to ask him to join the group. Collins quickly came to believe that Van Zant had no ill intentions toward him and decided to join the young band. Soon after the addition of bassist Larry Junstrom, the band decided on the name My Backyard, which was eventually modified to The Noble Five and then, by 1968, to The One Percent. In Jacksonville, Lynyrd Skynyrd was a popular band by 1970; they headlined a few local events and served as openers for a number of big-name bands. For a reunion tour in 1987, Ronnie’s brother Johnny Van Zant served as the group’s lead vocalist. Rickey Medlocke, who first composed and recorded with the band from 1971 to 1972 before his return in 1996, co-founder Rossington (the band’s lone enduring member), Johnny Van Zant, and Rickey Medlocke all continue to perform and record with them. Lynyrd Skynyrd announced its final tour in January 2018 and is still on the road as of October 2019. A fifteenth album is also being worked on by the members.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was placed No. 95 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” in 2004. On March 13, 2006, Lynyrd Skynyrd was admitted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The group has sold over 28 million records in the country thus far.
