Chart Performance: Pop (#1); 1959

Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

In 1959, Bobby Darin recorded Mack the Knife, a song originally written by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht for the 1928 German stage production The Threepenny Opera. The character “Mack the Knife,” or Macheath, was portrayed as a charming but dangerous criminal.

Produced by Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler, Darin’s version transformed the theatrical piece into a swinging pop arrangement. Released in the summer of 1959, Mack the Knife reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for nine weeks.

Unlike the darker tone of earlier interpretations, Darin’s recording presented the lyric with upbeat orchestration and smooth vocal delivery. The contrast between cheerful arrangement and grim subject matter became one of the song’s defining features.

Mack the Knife won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and remains Bobby Darin’s signature recording, bridging Broadway material and mainstream pop success.
