Manic Street Preachers Biography

Manic Street Preachers is a Welsh rock band formed in 1986, consisting of lead singer of Manic Street Preachers – James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire and Sean Moore.

At Oakdale Comprehensive School in Blackwood, South Wales, the Manic Street Preachers were created. Bradfield began by writing lyrics, but this was later delegated to Wire, leaving Bradfield and Sean Moore to compose music. Flicker (Miles Woodward), their original bassist, left the band in 1988, the same year they released their first single, ‘Suicide Alley.’ Richey Edwards, a guitarist, soon joined the band. They signed to Damaged Goods Records for the ‘New Art Riot’ EP in 1990, then to Heavenly Records in 1991. ‘Motown Junk’ was Manic Street Preachers’ first single for Heavenly Records.

After being questioned about their punk beginnings by an NME journalist following a show in Norwich in 1991, Richey Edwards slashed ‘4 Real’ onto his arm with a razorblade. He required 17 stitches. ‘Generation Terrorists,’ the band’s debut album, was released in 1992 on Columbia Records. It charted at number 13 in the United Kingdom. Their second album, ‘Gold Against the Soul,’ had a grungier sound and charted at number eight.

Edwards’ mental health deteriorated dramatically between 1994 and 1995, and he was taken to the private psychiatric institution The Priory in 1994, which the band paid for using monies raised from a few events he did not attend. In 1995, he vanished from a hotel where he was staying, and his automobile was discovered abandoned near the Severn Bridge. He was never located and was declared formally deceased in 2008. ‘Everything Must Go,’ the first album without Edwards, was a major hit. It was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 1996 and won two BRIT Awards. Its debut single, ‘A Design for Life,’ charted at number two in the United Kingdom. Their following album, ‘This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours,’ was released in 1998 and delivered their first and only number one song, ‘If You Tolerate This, Your Children Will Be Next.’They performed their first and largest concert in front of 80,000 fans in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium in 1999.

‘The Masses Against the Classes’ was their next number one hit, released in 2000. They were the first big Western rock band to perform in Cuba in 2001, and they met Fidel Castro. The new songs ‘Door to the River’ and ‘There by the Grace of God’ were included on their first greatest hits collection, ‘Forever Delayed,’ released in 2002. They released their seventh album, ‘Lifeblood,’ in 2004, ahead of a UK stadium tour. They announced their final tour for two years in 2005. They gave out copies of their new EP ‘God Save the Manics’ to concertgoers before publishing it as a free download on their website. In 2007, their eighth album, ‘Send Away the Tigers,’ reached number two on the charts. Later that year, they issued a free download of their Christmas single, “The Ghosts of Christmas.” They received the God-Like Geniuses Award at the NME Awards presentation in 2008. ‘Journal for Plague Lovers,’ their eighth album, was published in 2009 and includes some lyrics from long-lost bandmate Edwards.

The pop album ‘Postcards from a Young Man’ was published in 2010, and the first single ‘(It’s Not War) Just the End of Love’ received a lot of radio playing. The band British Sea Power supported them on their second tour, and two further singles, ‘Some Kind of Nothingness’ and the title track, were later released. In 2011, the band released ‘National Treasures – The Complete Singles,’ which was followed by a European tour. In 2012, the Chapter Arts Center in Wales screened an interview documentary video about their debut record, with proceeds going to the Young Promoters Network. They have sold more than ten million albums worldwide.
