Mariah Carey Biography

Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter, actor, and record producer. Her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, and signature use of the whistle register have earned her the titles of “Songbird Supreme” and “Queen of Christmas.” CShe became famous in 1990 after releasing her self-titled debut album. She was the first singer to have all five of her singles chart at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, from “Vision of Love” through “Emotions,” which she is best known for, as well as other well-known successes like “Fantasy” and “Always Be My Baby.”

Mariah was born on March 27, 1970, in Huntington, Long Island, New York. Her parents divorced when she was three years old. She astounded her mother when she imitated her operatic singing at the age of two, and she began taking singing lessons at the age of four. She eventually developed a five-octave range in her voice.

Mariah came to Manhattan after graduating from Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, in 1987, where she worked as a waitress and a coat check girl while studying cosmetology and creating songs at night. Mariah Carey joined Columbia Records at the age of 18 and scored four No. 1 hits with her debut album, Mariah Carey (1990), including “Vision of Love” and “I Don’t Wanna Cry.” She went on to have 19 No. 1 songs and sell over 200 million records, making her one of the most commercially successful musicians of all time.

Emotions, her second album, was released in 1992, and featured the successes “Can’t Let Go” and “Make it Happen,” as well as the title tune, which became her sixth No. 1 single. Mariah made an appearance on MTV’s Unplugged in March 1992. Another No. 1 hit (a rendition of The Jacksons’ “I’ll Be There”) resulted from this performance, which was published as an album and a home movie. Her following album, Music Box (1993), featured the No. 1 singles “Dreamlover” and “Hero” and pulled back on the extravagant studio production techniques seen on her prior albums.

Merry Christmas, released in November 1994, was a mix of traditional Christian hymns and modern compositions. Daydream was released in 1995, and the first song, “Fantasy,” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Collaborations with R&B and hip-hop acts like Wu-Tang Clan and Boyz II Men were also included (“One Sweet Day”).

Butterfly, Mariah’s 1997 album, featured 11 of her own compositions and showcased her persistent interest in hip-hop and R&B, including the Sean “Puffy” Combs-produced “Honey,” which became her 12th No. 1 single. #1’s, Carey’s 1998 album, contained 13 prior chart-topping songs as well as “The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe),” a duet with fellow pop diva Whitney Houston, which was nominated for an Academy Award.

She was selected the Artist of the Decade in the 1990s by Billboard, and she was crowned the best selling female pop artist of the millenium by the World Music Awards. After eleven years of number-one hits in the United States, Carey departed Columbia in 2001 and signed a $100 million recording contract with Virgin Records. Her contract was bought for $28 million by Virgin after her widely publicized physical and mental breakdown and the failure of her film Glitter (2001) and its soundtrack, and she signed with Island Records the following year.

Mariah returned with The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), which went on to become the best-selling album in the United States and the world’s second best-selling album of 2005. “We Belong Together,” the band’s second hit, topped the Billboard Hot 100 decade-end chart in the United States (2000s). Her work in the 2009 film Precious earned her the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Breakthrough Actress Performance Award. Serving as a judge on American Idol, starring in the docu-series Mariah’s World, participating in the films The Butler (2013), A Christmas Melody (2015), and The Lego Batman Movie (2017), and writing her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey in 2020 were among her later endeavors.

Mariah is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, with over 220 million albums sold worldwide. Nineteen of her songs have reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She has the most number-one songs by a solo artist, a female songwriter, and a female producer. With 69.5 million certified album units, Mariah is the highest-certified female artist in the United States. She was rated second on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music, and Billboard dubbed her “The Greatest Female Artist of All Time” in 2019, based on album and single chart performances.

She has five Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, ten American Music Awards, and fifteen Billboard Music Awards to her credit. She is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and is credited for inspiring other R&B musicians, as well as being one of the first to popularize hip hop music.
