Mary J Blige Biography

Mary Jane Blige is a singer, songwriter, rapper, and actress from the United States. Blige has won nine Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards, and ten Billboard Music Awards, and is known as the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.” She’s been nominated for three Golden Globes and two Academy Awards, including one for her supporting part in Mudbound (2017) and another for the film’s original song “Mighty River,” making her the first individual to be nominated for both acting and songwriting in the same year.

Blige was born in Fordham Hospital in the Bronx, New York City, on January 11, 1971. Her mother, Cora, is a nurse, and her father, Thomas Blige, is a jazz musician. She is the youngest of four siblings. She was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, where she sang in a Pentecostal church.

Her career began when she signed with Uptown Records in 1991. What’s the 411?, Blige’s debut album, was published in 1992 and is credited with introducing the mix of R&B and hip hop into mainstream pop culture. Its remix album from 1993 was the first to have a rapper on every song, popularizing rap as a featured act. The Rolling Stones‘ 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list includes both What’s the 411? and her 1994 album My Life, with the latter being on Time magazine’s All-Time 100 Albums list. Blige has 14 studio albums to her credit, all of which have been in the top ten on the Billboard 200, with four of them reaching number one. “Real Love,” “Not Gonna Cry,” “Be Without You,” and the Billboard Hot 100 number-one single “Family Affair” are among her biggest hits.

With supporting roles in films like Prison Song (2001), Rock of Ages (2012), Betty and Coretta (2013), Black Nativity (2013), her Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated breakthrough performance as Florence Jackson in Mudbound (2017), Trolls World Tour (2020), Body Cam (2020), The Violent Heart (2021), and co-starring as jazz singer Dinah Washington in the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect, Blige has made a successful transition to both the television and movie screens in 2021. In the first season of the Netflix television series The Umbrella Academy, Blige played Cha-Cha. She now portrays Monet Tejada in Power in Power Book II: Ghost, a spin-off of the popular TV drama Power in Power.

In 2006, she got a Legends Award from the World Music Awards, and in 2007, she earned the ASCAP Voice of Music Award. Blige was named the most successful female R&B/Hip-Hop artist of the last 25 years by Billboard. Her 2006 single “Be Without You” was voted the most popular R&B/Hip-Hop song of all time by Billboard magazine in 2017, after spending an unprecedented 15 weeks at the top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and over 75 weeks on the chart.Blige was named the 80th best performer of all time by VH1 in 2011. Blige was voted number 9 on VH1’s list of “The 100 Greatest Women in Music” in 2012. Blige was nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the first time in February 2021. Blige received the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards in 2022.
