Matchbox Twenty Biography

Matchbox Twenty, initially known as Matchbox 20 and spelled Matchbox Twenty on most official items, is a rock band from Orlando, Florida, that has sold over 39 million albums worldwide. In several nations, the band has been well accepted.

Rob Thomas (vocals, piano), Paul Doucette (drums, now guitar), Kyle Cook (lead guitar, vocals), and Brian Yale (bass) are the current members of the band. Adam Gaynor (rhythm guitar), who has since left the band, also appeared on the band’s first three albums. Rob Thomas is the band’s lead singer and lyricist.

Before forming Matchbox Twenty with Cook and Gaynor, Thomas, Yale, and Doucette were members of the Orlando, Florida-based band Tabitha’s Secret.

Matchbox Twenty’s first album, Yourself or Someone Like You, was released in 1996. While their debut single, “Long Day,” was a rock radio only hit, the album quickly produced multiple Top 40 hit singles, including “Push,” “3 A.M.,” “Real World,” and “Back 2 Good” in 1997 and 1998. The album went on to sell over 12 million copies in the United States alone, earning it diamond certification. For several years, the band toured nonstop, performing songs from their one and only album as well as popular cover tunes like Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” and The Beatles‘ “Don’t Let Me Down.” Because of their exciting live performances and the longevity of their popular tracks on the radio, their fan base swelled from concert to concert. Matchbox Twenty recorded a live version of their Top-40 smash “3 A.M.” for the charity album Live in the X Lounge in the same year, with proceeds going to cerebral palsy research.

Rob Thomas and Itaal Shur worked on a song called “Smooth” for Carlos Santana‘s comeback album, Supernatural, before producing their second album. The song featured Thomas’ poetic abilities and had a pop-tinged Latin beat. Thomas was meant to be the sole songwriter of “Smooth,” but after hearing the song’s demo recording, Carlos Santana insisted that he also sing on it. The album’s lead track, “Smooth,” was a huge smash in 1999, earning Thomas three Grammy’s for writing and performing it, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Matchbox 20 changed their name to Matchbox Twenty and released their second album, Mad Season, in 2000. The album included lavish musical compositions and produced multiple successful songs, including “Bent” (which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100) and “If You’re Gone.” The video for “Bent” mocked singer Thomas’ increased popularity as a result of “Smooth” by depicting the other band members brutally abusing him. “If You’re Gone,” an evocatively orchestrated ballad, became a tremendous hit, especially on adult contemporary formats.

“Mad Season” and “Last Beautiful Girl,” the band’s following two singles, were not very successful. Despite not being issued as a single, “Black & White People” has received radio play, according to fans.

The band reverted to a heavier rock sound on their third album, More Than You Think You Are. On some songs, Thomas collaborated with the other band members on songwriting. “Disease,” “Unwell,” and “Bright Lights” were all popular singles from the album.

Show: A Night in the Life of Matchbox Twenty, a live concert DVD filmed in Atlanta and including 20 songs, including all of the band’s hit singles, was released in May 2004.

Gaynor formally quit the band in February 2005, after it had been on hiatus to allow other members to pursue solo projects. Rob Thomas went on to release a solo album,…Something To Be, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 in the United States in its first week of release. “Lonely No More,” “This Is How a Heart Breaks,” “Ever the Same,” and “Streetcorner Symphony” were among the album’s four big singles.

Rob Thomas released a single called “Little Wonders” in January 2007, which he wrote for the Disney film Meet the Robinsons. Their “Exile On Mainstream” album was released as a two-disc set on October 2, 2007. The first disc included six new songs, including the smash “How Far We’ve Come,” which could be heard together with a music video on the accompanying website. The second CD had 11 of their most popular songs, including “Push,” “Bent,” and “Unwell.”

Matchbox Twenty’s fourth studio album North, according to She’s So Mean Songfacts, is the band’s first new material in ten years, but they did record seven new songs for their 2007 compilation album Exile On Mainstream. On September 4, 2012, the album was released.
