My Bloody Valentine Biography

My Bloody Valentine is a shoegaze band from Dublin, Ireland, founded in 1983. Kevin Shields (vocals, guitar), Bilinda Butcher (vocals, guitar), Debbie Googe (bass), and Colm Cosóig (drums) are the band‘s most well-known members. Isn’t Anything, their 1988 album, is widely recognized as one of the most influential records of the era, serving as a forerunner to the early 1990s “shoegazing” genre. Loveless, the band’s second full-length album, was released in 1991 and was afterwards hailed as one of the best albums of the decade. After failing to make a follow-up album, the band disbanded in 1997. The band reformed in 2007 and toured extensively the following year. m b v, the band’s third album, was released in February 2013. Their song “When You Sleep” is one of their most popular songs.

Kevin Shields, a reclusive perfectionist and radically imaginative guitarist/engineer, is the band’s most important member. MBV also had singer-guitarist Bilinda Butcher and bassist Debbie Googe during their heyday. The band’s other founding member is drummer/studio maven Colm Cosóig; during its heyday, MBV also included singer-guitarist Bilinda Butcher and bassist Debbie Googe. A low-budget Canadian slasher film has the same name as their band.

The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Cocteau Twins, late-1970s Wire, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and independent musicians such as The Pastels are all influences for MBV. The Beach Boys and The Ramones were other personal influences for Kevin Shields.

The band went into a creative rut after leaving Creation Records in 1992 and joined with Island Records. Rumors of albums being recorded and then shelved began to circulate among their followers. Debbie Googe departed the band to join Snowpony, and she hadn’t played bass on any of their albums since You Made Me Realize. Colm Cosóig eventually left and founded Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions with Hope Sandoval, previously of Mazzy Star. Kevin Shields worked with a variety of artists on occasion, including Experimental Audio Research, Curve, and Primal Scream. In a fall 2003 interview with National Public Radio, he claimed that Island Records had stopped funding his My Bloody Valentine projects after he had wasted half a million pounds of their money.

Many rumors circulated in 2006 about MBV reuniting for a new studio album, but none of them were real. My Bloody Valentine announced three upcoming live shows for 2008 in the United Kingdom on November 15, 2007. The band performed in front of an audience for the first time in thirteen years on June 13 and 14, presenting a pair of “Live Rehearsal” presentations at the ICA in London and formally kicking off their comeback tour. In the summer and fall of 2008, the band performed at a number of events. Shields planned to finish the unfinished record after their appearance at the 2008 All Tomorrow’s Parties festival, according to the New York Times.

They self-released their self-titled album m b v on February 2nd, 2013 as a download, with vinyl and CD copies coming on February 22nd. The Huffington Post reported that it caused such a public stir that the official MBV website crashed when fans attempted to access the site to purchase a copy.
