Nick Cave Biography

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are an Australian rock band led by vocalist Nick Cave, multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey, and guitarist-vocalist Blixa Bargeld, who started the band in 1983. Cave, violinist and multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis, bassist Martyn P. Casey (all from Australia), guitarist George Vjestica (United Kingdom), keyboardist/percussionist Toby Dammit (United States), and drummers Thomas Wydler (Switzerland) and Jim Sclavunos (United States) make up the current lineup. They have released seventeen studio albums and conducted multiple international tours. They have been described as “one of the most original and respected bands of the post-punk and alternative rock eras in the ’80s and onward.”

Nick Cave, whose full name is Nicholas Edward Cave, is an Australian singer-songwriter, actor, novelist, and screenwriter best known for fronting the bands the Birthday Party and the Bad Seeds during the post-punk era. His somber lyrics of life, love, betrayal, and death have made him famous.

With guitarist Rowland Howard, bassist Tracy Pew, and drummer Phil Calvert, Cave and schoolmate Mick Harvey created the Boys Next Door in Melbourne in the mid-1970s. Before relocating to London in 1980 and changing its name to the Birthday Party, the band released numerous albums. The Birthday Party immediately gained a cult following after appearing on John Peel’s British Broadcasting Corporation radio programme, which led to a recording contract with 4AD and the publication of their trademark album, Junkyard (1982).

Following the demise of the Birthday Party in 1983, Cave and Harvey formed Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in Berlin, alongside former Magazine bassist Barry Adamson and Einstürzende Neubauten frontmann Blixa Bargeld. The Bad Seeds fused the dark intensity of the Birthday Party with a passionate examination of love and the anguish it may cause. “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” a collaboration with Australian singer Kylie Minogue from the 1996 album Murder Ballads, was the band’s biggest commercial triumph. Although Bargeld quit the Bad Seeds in 2003, the publication of the double album Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus (2004) signified that the band was still alive and well. In 2006, Cave established Grinderman, a Bad Seeds side project that combined caustic, self-deprecating humor with the wrath of the Birthday Party. The Bad Seeds returned to the studio between the releases of Grinderman’s two namesake albums (2007 and 2010), creating the critically praised Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! (2008). Harvey and Cave and the Bad Seeds broke up in 2009, ending one of the most enduring post punk collaborations. The remaining members of the band stuck it out with the bleak Push the Sky Away (2013). Cave’s 15-year-old son’s unintentional death in 2015 became the subject of the elegiac Skeleton Tree (2016). Ghosteen, a double album, was published in 2019.

And the Ass Saw the Angel (1989), a Southern gothic tale, and The Death of Bunny Munro (1990) were both published by Cave (2009). The Sick Bag Song (2016), an epic poem inspired by his tour with the Bad Seeds in 2014, was one of his other works. Cave has dabbled with film-making on occasion.

He composed music for films such as The Proposition (2005), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), The Road (2009), Hell or High Water (2016), and Kings with Bad Seeds member Warren Ellis (2018). He also wrote the screenplays for The Proposition, which won a special prize at the 2006 Venice Film Festival, and Lawless (2012), a drama about bootlegging set during Prohibition. Cave’s acting credits include the films Ghosts…of the Civil Dead (1988) and Johnny Suede (1989), both of which he also co-wrote (1991). The documentaries 20,000 Days on Earth (2014) and One More Time with Feeling (2015) were both about caves (2016).
