Numb – Linkin Park | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning
Chart Performance: Pop (#11) and Alternative (#1); 2003
Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling
In 2003, Linkin Park released Numb as the third single from their album Meteora. Written by the band and produced by Don Gilmore, the song became one of their most enduring hits.
Built around a prominent piano motif and layered guitars, the recording balances electronic elements with alternative rock dynamics. Chester Bennington’s vocal performance carries the emotional weight of the track.
Released in the fall of 2003, Numb reached #1 on the Billboard Alternative chart and crossed over to the Top 20 on the Hot 100. It became one of the band’s most recognized recordings.
The lyric centers on pressure and the struggle to meet expectations, particularly within close relationships. Rather than focusing on a specific situation, the message reflects a broader feeling of emotional detachment and frustration.
Numb remains one of Linkin Park’s signature songs and a defining track of early-2000s alternative rock.
