Chart Performance: Pop (#5) and R&B (#1); 1955

Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

In 1955, The Platters released Only You (And You Alone), the single that established them as one of the leading vocal groups of the decade. Written by Buck Ram and Ande Rand, the song showcased lead singer Tony Williams’ distinctive tenor.

Produced by Buck Ram, the recording featured a restrained doo-wop arrangement with gentle backing harmonies supporting Williams’ expressive vocal. Released in the summer of 1955, Only You reached #1 on the R&B chart and climbed into the Top 5 on the Billboard Pop chart.

The lyric centers on singular devotion. Rather than elaborate imagery, the narrator emphasizes how one person alone has the power to inspire love and emotional transformation.

Only You became one of The Platters’ signature recordings and remains a defining example of mid-1950s vocal harmony crossover success.
