Ozzy Osbourne Biography

Ozzy Osbourne is an English singer, songwriter, and television personality named John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne. He rose to notoriety in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath, earning the moniker “Prince of Darkness” during that time.

Osbourne was born on December 3, 1948, in Marston Green Maternity Hospital near Coleshill, but grew up in Birmingham’s Aston neighborhood. Geezer Butler started his first band, Rare Breed, in late 1967 and quickly enlisted Ozzy Osbourne as a frontman. After two gigs, the band disbanded. In Polka Tulk Blues, Osbourne and Butler reunited with guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward, whose band Mythology had recently disbanded. They changed their name to Earth, but after being mistakenly booked for a gig by another band with the same name, they decided to change it back. In August 1969, they decided on the name Black Sabbath.

Osbourne left Black Sabbath in 1979 owing to alcohol and drug problems, but went on to have a successful solo career, releasing 12 studio albums, the first seven of which were certified multi-platinum in the United States. Ozzy Osbourne has rejoined with Black Sabbath multiple times since then. He returned in 1997 and assisted in the recording of the group’s final studio album, 13 (2013), before embarking on a farewell tour that culminated in a February 2017 performance in Birmingham, Alabama. His longevity and success have earned him the informal title “Godfather of Metal”.
