Paul Revere & The Raiders – Biography, Songs, Albums, Discography & Facts

Paul Revere Biography

The American rock group Paul Revere & the Raiders, popularly known as the Raiders, was founded in 1958 in Boise, Idaho. Their music ranged from garage rock to psychedelic pop, but their early style merged fast-paced, guitar-and-vocal-dominated rock and roll with a threatening R&B flavor. They experienced significant U.S. mainstream success in the latter part of the 1960s and the early 1970s. The band was well renowned for wearing clothing inspired by the American Revolution.

The Raiders, which included singer Mark Lindsay, were founded in 1958 by keyboardist Paul Revere and were originally known as the Downbeats, an instrumental rock band. Following small hits “Like, Long Hair” in 1961 and a cover of “Louie Louie” that narrowly missed Billboard’s Hot 100 in late 1963, the band was signed to Columbia Records and worked with producer Terry Melcher. The single “Just Like Me,” which was aided by exposure on Dick Clark’s programs like Where The Action Is, peaked at no. 11 on the Hot 100 in January 1966. This was followed by the Top Ten singles “Kicks” and “Hungry” in quick succession, making the band into a household name. Lindsay was shown on Clark’s TV shows as a teen idol, and Revere was portrayed as the group’s “madman,” and between 1966 and 1969, they had 12 successes that helped them reach the top 30. The three 1966 albums Just Like Us, Midnight Ride, and The Spirit of ’67 were all given gold certification by the RIAA, helped along by the success of the singles.

While still a member of the group, Mark Lindsay started a solo career, hitting with two 1970 top 30 singles including the Top Ten hit “Arizona.” Lindsay took over as the Raiders’ producer from Terry Melcher, and the band scored with the 1969 US no. 20 hit “Let Me” and its parent LP Alias Pink Puzz. Beginning in early 1970, the group’s name was just Raiders.

The Raiders had a resurgence in 1971 thanks to the extremely popular cover of the song “Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian),” which peaked at number one in the US and Canada. The track was certified platinum in 1996. But when they couldn’t duplicate the record’s popularity, Columbia dropped the band in 1975, and Lindsay opted out. Paul Revere retired from the music business in 1976, and the Raiders split up.The retirement of Revere was brief. He returned to live appearances in 1978 with a comedy-rock-and-roll act. Paul Revere’s Raiders became the name of the band after Revere’s death from cancer in 2014.

The Raiders have been regarded as an influence on groups like the Paisley Underground and the garage rock revival and grunge movements. On Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs ever, “Kicks” came in at number 400 in 2004. On October 13, 2007, Roger Hart, the band’s manager, and Paul Revere & the Raiders were inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. The group was admitted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2010. Three of the band’s big singles—”Hungry” (1966), “Good Thing” (1966), and “Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon” (1969)—as well as the 1968 B-side “Theme From It’s Happening” were included in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 movie Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, which is set in 1969.
