Pearl Jam Biography
Pearl Jam is a Seattle, Washington-based American rock band that formed in 1990. Eddie Vedder (lead vocals), Mike McCready (lead guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), and Jeff Ament (bass) have been members of the band since its formation. Matt Cameron has been a member of the band since 1998 (also of Soundgarden). Since 2002, Boom Gaspar (piano) has been a session/tour member with the band. Their songs “Alive” and “Even Flow” are well-known. They’re still present till today.
In March 1991, Pearl Jam visited Seattle’s London Bridge Studios to make their debut album, Ten. “Ten was largely Stone and Jeff at the time; myself and Eddie were along for the ride,” McCready stated. Krusen departed the band in May 1991 after entering alcoholism treatment; he was replaced by Matt Chamberlain, who had previously played with Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians. Chamberlain left to join the Saturday Night Live band after only a few gigs, one of which was captured for the “Alive” video. Dave Abbruzzese was mentioned by Chamberlain as a possible successor. Abbruzzese joined the band and accompanied Ten for the rest of Pearl Jam’s live shows.
Ten (called after Mookie Blaylock’s jersey number) was released on August 27, 1991, and comprised eleven tracks that dealt with grim topics such as depression, suicide, loneliness, and murder. Ten’s musical style was influenced by classic rock and had a “expansive harmonic vocabulary” as well as an anthemic tone. The album took a while to gain traction, but by the second half of 1992, it was certified gold and had reached number two on the Billboard charts.
Ten spent nearly five years on the Billboard 200 chart and went on to become one of the best-selling rock albums of all time, selling 13 times platinum in the United States. Pearl Jam’s second album, Vs., was released in 1993 and sold over 950,000 copies in its first week, breaking the record for most albums sold in a single week at the time. Vitalogy (1994), their third album, became the second-fastest-selling CD in history at the time, selling over 877,000 copies in its first week.
Pearl Jam, one of the most important bands in the early 1990s grunge movement, avoided common music industry tactics such as recording music videos and engaging in interviews. Ticketmaster was also sued by the band, who claimed it had monopolized the concert ticket market. The band “spent most of the past decade actively pulling apart their own stardom,” according to Rolling Stone in 2006.
By 2012, the band had sold about 32 million albums in the United States, and they had sold over 85 million albums globally. Pearl Jam outsold many contemporaneous alternative rock acts in the early 1990s, and is widely regarded as one of the decade’s most influential bands.
In its first year of eligibility, Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. In Rolling Stone magazine’s “Top Ten Live Acts of All Time” issue, they were voted No. 8 in a reader survey. The band has also championed broader social and political themes throughout its career, ranging from pro-choice sentiments to opposition to George W. Bush’s presidency. On these topics, Vedder serves as the band’s spokesman.
